Hey bas, how about this?
You reach into your pocket for some change, and discover you have a pawn. I wonder how that got there? I found a little pawn. It wandered off the board. Must have hit the edge and kept on going. Which means that now ... It's overdue for a promotion! (It turns into a matching Queen from a larger set.) |

There's always the Knights game. I've never done it, but I'm pretty sure it uses a chessboard and a knight.

Maybe some kind of Cups & Balls theme with pawns, and a queen as the final load, and using the premise/patter about a pawn's ability to promote to another piece (almost always a queen).

There's an old, I think, Martin Gardner trick where you fold up a checkerboard pattern and with one cut separate the two colors.

With loops and/or a reel you could do some crazy harrypotteresque animations...
I love chess this is a very interesting topic to handle... Perhaps a prediction of where the player moves? Or of a card written under the piece they choose at random. I think you have two situations where this kind of effect could be utilized. Close up table hopping, or during play with a friend. If with a friend you would have to do something with game play: Ie: a pice freezes and no one can move it till you say magic words, or you acurately predict the outcome of the game, who has what pieces. Just a few ideas.

Hello BK
You can introduce two matching groups (black/white) of different pieces and predict which color will be chosen and the exact piece that will be selected via a combination of any or all of the equivoque/magician's choice, multiple outs, magnetic principles or even the common "hot rod" force. Julie |

I've done some brazen transformations of one color to the other. Not too hard to do if you're seated and are able to lap.

I heard from a friend that anecdotal evidence is actually quite reliable. |

You could have a chop cup shaped as a queen, using pawns instad of balls.
Effects could include colour changing pawns, final load of extra pieces (say horse, then rook) |

If you pass a pawn to the back row, it can become a queen, great patter for a change. I am a chess nut, and mention that technically, the pawn can be exchanged for any piece, and offer them their choice! plays great.

You could also change the knight (horse) into a toy knight?

Use the technique of challenging two players (who play chess much better than you), predicting a draw and putting each player against each other (by playing what the other person plays (cf. Corinda).

Nabs8: not sure I understand. Can you elaborate?

Sorry it's a bit late, but since you didn't get your reply: What NabsS means is you play 2 games of chess against 2 different opponents and predict that the outcome will be a draw (1 win and 1 loss to you, same to the combined opponents). you let the opponent go first in one game, rememeber his move and then make that against the other guy, then go back and forth passing the moves on until the end, where you will have won 1 and lost 1. Derren Brown did it with 12 (I think) champions on his TV show once, just played half the rooms moves against the other half
