I was wondering, would you prefer to live in a country where there were, say, 10,000 murders a year, and 10% got away with it, or a country (with the same size population) where only 1,000, but 50% got away with it?
Assuming there was a connection between the mechanism leading to less murders but a higher percentage likelihood in getting away with it.

Depends on how much of one's intent to explore that form of self expression involves the death of others I guess.

Not much on art-crime here but there's no arguing economics.

Prefer?

I would prefer to live in a country where there are no murders at all.

Not a choice? Well then...

In lieu of that choice of preference, I'll just stay where I am now and do my little bit to prevent crime.

? brutal means force/pain in excess of requirements.
Settle for a more wealthy/peaceful place for its citizens type of society?

I think murder rate per capita is a good yardstick for societal brutality tbh.

By that you mean cost per socially sanctioned killing? The cheaper the better then?
How about capital punishment - use/efficacy/cruel and unusual punishment?

IMHO there are underlying economic issues that make simple statistical measures of 'all else being equal' less than helpful.

Where did you get 'cost' from? You've lost me.

I'd rather live in the society with the lower per capita murder rate and campaign for a more efficient law enforcement/judicial murder clearup rate than in the society with the x10 murder rate and the more efficient clearup.

I think the more chance there is of getting away with muder the more muders there will be. Anyway I think its better that there are only 1000 than 10000 regardless of what the chances of the muderer is of getting away with it, whatever that means. I mean I have known murderers be convicted and get away with it because they did not get a sentence that fitted the crime IMHO. Not all muders are equal.

What if you lived in a society with a high percentage murder rate, but all the murders are done in isolated, prescribed neighborhoods, not yours?

A women came into my restaurant and asked if it was ok to put a sign up there for her missing cat.

I liked the 80's gang members, with their twisted up bandanas, parachute pants, and thin sunglasses.

I'm very glad to live in a country where murder is occasional enough to be noteworthy and most are solved.

I would assume that the knowledge that most murderers were caught and punished would dissuade some people from doing it.

And while I haven't looked up anything, from what I read in the papers and see on the news, most murders here do not happen in the course of another crime committed by a stranger, but by a person who has a close relationship with the victim.

And now for a handy household hint - I'll be the Martha Stewart of domestic crime prevention. If you have a potentially crazy or emotionally turbulent loved one, make sure the kitchen knives all have rounded points.

I once read a study about people stabbed during the course of domestic arguments and most people stabbed with a rounded knife, by a loved one in a rage, survive, unlike those stabbed by a knife with a sharp point.
