Hey all, I am new here, and I want to know of some books/DVDs, that will teach me MIND-BOGGLING tricks that aren't well known to magicians or lay people. I do magic to professional magicians once in a while, but I don't do anything spectacular. Next time I see some of these people, I want to start out by FLOORING them, and end it by KILLING them (figuratively speaking). I don't really want to use a gimmick unless the trick is phenomenal. I want to use everyday objects for the most part. and I want the tricks to not be very well known. Also, do any of you know of an unusual, stunning, beautiful (and possible practical) flourish. All help is appreciated. Remember I am going for the FLOOR 'em and KILL 'em routine with tricks that they have probably never seen before.
Thanks.

Mor'n likely tain't goin' ta happen.
Even if you manage to, as you say "WOW" a fellow magi mor'n likely he tisn't going to admit to it. He'll just sit there 'n go "interesting variatrion of the classic branson gambit" or sum other such nonsense. Anyway if it's obscure material yer looin fer ya ain't going ta find it on no DVD, unless of course ya all know someone who went to tha trouble of makin themselves a DVD and then only gave 'em out ter their closets of friends. The energy that one will waste trying to fool a magician is better spent on learning how to entertain a layman.

If you want to Mindboggle and Floor fellow magicians with never before seen tricks.....you are going to have to develop them yourself....because...if they are in a book or on a DVD and they are mindboggling....your fellow magicians are probably going to be aware of them...especially...if they are discussed on this website!!!

Forget DVD's...go to the classic books on magic and find an effect no one has done for years. Then make it your own with an original twist so the guys who may have read the book don't recognize it right away. And if they do, so what, they will applaud your clever originality.

Look in old books. Personally I've come up with a few magician-foolers myself from reading lots of Annemann books. Remember, there's GOLD in the OLD.
Thought: Why does man kill? He kills for food. And not only food: frequently there must be a beverage.

Um 5star...
Those of us who do fool our audiences of both magicians and real people do so by looking for ideas outside of those often discussed on places like this. There are lots of old and forgotten books around. And wonderful material from the likes of Hofzinser and Germain to both perform and inspire you to create. It all starts with a solid background and a personal vision of what seems magical to you. Enjoy Jonathan Townsend

I have to jump on the "Me Too!" bandwagon. Books and magazines have some great gems in them.
Due to many magicians' focus on the hot new items, many items are overlooked. Even with newer publications, though, the following adage seems to hold true: "If you want to keep a secret, put it in print." I always chuckle when I see someone perform an idea from the previous month's Magic or Genii, and others say, "Wow! Where is that from?" I wouldn't look forward to completely fooling another magician, though. I'm delighted when I'm genuinely fooled, but it is extremely rare when I have no idea as a rough method. I would encourage you to follow Payne's advice, and focus instead on making an entertaining presentation for laymen. Even other magicians (well, those who appreciate effects over methods) will enjoy a good presentation. Good luck! |
