The performer holds up a large, paperback book titled "Hope Diamond," about the notorious accursed gem -- and the performer asks a volunteer to hold a picture postcard -- a prominent, close-up photo of the Hope Diamond. The postcard is sold in the gift shop at Washington, D.C.'s, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, where the actual 45 carat, blue diamond is on display -- encased in glass -- under armed guard.
Performer has spectator look through the "Hope Diamond" book, think of a word and then the performer reads the spectator's thoughts -- gets the word -- letter by letter ((hanks Banachek.) Performer then takes back the Hope-Diamond postcard that was in a volunteer's hand the whole time -- and slowly the performer pulls out the real Hope Diamond from the photograph, just plucks that sucker straight out and hands it to the spectator. Jay Sankey performs the photograph effect with a golf ball on his DVD "Hardcore." (Thanks Jay Sankey.) |

Since the performer pulls the "real Hope Diamond" from the photo and hands it to the spectator, I'm guessing this would be fairly expensive to pull off? Sounds like a good example of turning a nice piece of mentalism into a magic trick.

Can the volunteer keep the diamond as a souvenir?

Yes, because it has a curse on it -- reserved for mentalists who take themselves too seriously.

Its definitely a magic trick...
the real curse is that someone will accept that what you describe is what mentalism is all about...

Please don't send me back to reeducation camp. The meals, the long indoctrination sessions based on the tenets of Marxist-Leninist mentalism doctrine...I just might try to run away and do a magic trick to see somebody smile.

What a fool! To sneak over to "Penny" to share something creative. I should have known Party Bosses and their cadre are vigilant.

I think the foolish thing is to post an idea up, and then turn sarcastic when someone else has a different opinion - and then has the audacity to say it on an open forum...
I really must apologise to all involved... well done you - its a fine example of mentalism, and definitely doesn't look like a magic trick, producing that diamond and all...oh no...especially as it means you'd have broken into the museum and stolen it... congratulations...very generous of you to give it out for free...thank you...do I have to peform it in a funny voice?!

It's okay that it's not 100% pure mentalism, why should it always be? Fun is fun, a smile is a smile, and if that is your focus with this presentation, then I am sure you have succeeded. I could see myself doing something like this casually for friends or family, though I wouldn't do it while working because it doesn't fit with the other stuff I do or with how I choose to present myself, but it's a neat idea, thank you for sharing. For the record, Fib has a wonderful voice as a fellow broadcaster AND he performs straight mentalism with a funny edge, too! Here's proof, a YouTube video I am a big fan of. Hilarious, fun, may not be your cuppa tea, but I love it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=astBke0tvcs

Sorry fib if I have offended you. I guess I should've considered how the joke would be received by you. I wasn't trying to be sarcastic or anything. I just thought it was funny when you said you'd pull out the "real" Hope Diamond that's all.

Bob, would that book test be with a bra catalog? Because then you could lead into ABAAN (Any Bra At Any Number).
