This is a great idea for clamping odd/large shapes for assembly.
I am developing a speciality clamp and needed an large adjustable rubber band to adapt to many different lengths yet provide the same tension. The answer was as simple as cutting a large band (7" flat x 1/16 thick x 5/8 wide) in half and using a binder clip to pinch the pieces together at the length I needed, the clip attached along the length of the band. I used a small clip for my prototype and I'm using a micro for my final design. Any thype of clamp would work. My final design uses a rubberband with side release buckles. The binder clip is used to secure the band around the back of the buckle. It is quite versitle. They make these rubber bands up to 2" wide and maybe 48" flat. Big enough for a pallet. You can take one of these big bands and quickly adjust it down to use as a wrap around clamp. The clips hold. I have tested under full tension for 72 hours and there was no slipping of the band. I have not tested the larger bands - yet. I would use bigger or more clips for larger bands. For home use I have glued (w/urethane adhesive) the inside of the binder clip to one end of the rubber band. This makes it really easy to use. Any one see anything like this? While this is free info to use for your own personal projects please do not incorporate the idea into any product without my permission. We are fileing a patent on our product and claim ownership (until proven otherwise!) of the idea of an adjustable elastic band using a spring clip/clamp and/or buckles. Try it, it works! |

I just use elastic with knots along it and a loop at the end.
