Hey Pete,
For some reason, I was thinking that Kaps used JP cups for his routine with sponges. However, the video off your site doesn't show that. Did he use the Paul style at some point, or do I have someone else in my mind? Thanks
Michael J.

Kaps didn't use the JP'S they are not big enough for some of his moves. I think his were made in Europe.

Yes, those were exactly the ones I was thinking of. I loved seeing the similar shape in the Tin Cups Revival thread.
Maybe it's time to perform some spring cleaning and start selling old/unused items. |

Weren't the origionals made of Foolium?

Yes Foolium was a special alloy consisting of cheap aluminum.

The cups Johnny Paul used on the Greater Magic Library video were made of aluminum and were ordinary tapered cups that were sold by some magic company in Chicago, probably not Ireland's or Magic, Inc. I have those cups.

Off topic a little now (sorry) but may be of interest...Johnny was visting with Arthur and they went to a social club near Arthur's home. The club was crowded, and there should have been a singer, but for some reason she hadn't arrived. Arthur mentioned to the organising people that his guest (Johnny) was a magician from the US and was well known. Of course, Johnny performed and killed them. Actually, Johnny Paul's cups, that is, the set he used on the Greater Magic Video Library session, were not Petrie-Lewis cups. They were much cheaper than that. Jim Ryan used the same kind of cups. The set I have were part of the John Fisher collection. John got them from Johnny's widow. I got them at auction, along with lots of documentation, including the video where they were used.
If you are familiar with P&L cups, the differences are many and obvious.

I bow to your greater knowledge, Bill. I just reported what Arthur told me a few years back. Having looked at some photographs of P&L cups I can see the shape is certainly different. Arthur may have been referring to cups Johnny had used at an earlier time (or he may have not remembered correctly).
I've never handled any P&L cups, and the only cups I own are a set of Paul Fox (Danny Dew) cups I bought from Ken Brooke in the 1970's, and those lovely brass cups from Pete Biro. These are my preferred cups for performing. If I'd missed the run of brass cups I would certainly want them in aluminium. |

It could have been that he used a set of P&L cups briefly. However, the taper isn't quite right to do the job that Johnny needed them to do. There was a run of sets, probably about 50 sets, that Johnny commissioned before Pete brought out his version. There was a fire in the warehouse where the cups were stored and all the sets except for one or two were destroyed. Gary Darwin has one of those sets.
Incidentally, Harry Stanley had P&L make some cups for him that he marketed as the Harry Stanley "Super Cup." These were gold plated. I have a set that belonged to Andrew Galloway. When Ken Brooke worked at the House of Veroni Magic Co., he also sold cups that were spun by P&L. I verified this info with Simon Lovell.

For me, the "Johnny Paul" cups from Pete Biro are just right. I know that Pete had the taper slightly different from that used by Johnny, in order to provide a more general purpose cup. The cup is just right with my Fab Fruit lemons, and suits my routine perfectly.
Thank you Pete Biro and Michael Ammar. And thank you Bill Palmer for sharing your wide knowledge |

I did copy the JP cups from the one that Gary Darwin had. My intent was to exactly duplicate the shape for the sponge ball retention of Johnny's. I'm glad, Riley, that you are pleased with them.

I've always wanted set of Pete's JP's. I played with the set Dean has at his shop. Of course they are great for the JP routine but they're just plain nice cups . National made cups that worked for the JP routine but don't handle anywhere near the ones that Pete made.
God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

I too messed around with that set in Dean's Shoppe and combined with the sponge balls, they made for some great moves!
