Whenever I perform this bit (and/or the Sword Through the Neck), I always ask the person booking for an appropriate volunteer in advance. I then meet with the man before the show (I always use a man for this routine), show him the prop, and explain this is going to be very easy for him. I haven't had any problems, but this gives him an opportunity to decline if he doesn't feel comfortable. Were that to happen, I would then ask the booker if he or she knew someone else who was willing.

This routine and the Sword Through the Neck are somewhat invasive, so I don't think it's a good idea to spring them on volunteers. I like to brief them before the show and assure them that it will be easy and fun.
