Here's a silly thing I was doing today in my shows.
When a child tells me their name I go "Oh, from the poem?" And when they ask what poem I make up a limerick using their name. Or when I remember for the birthday child I make it up in the car on the way. Todays poems where: There was a young Lady called Niamh, (pron neev) Who liked to keep things up her sleeve, She had up her right, 3 shoes and a kite, And in the left one a monkey called Steve. There was a young lady called Pippa, Who was remarkably chipper, She would shout "Hurray!, It's my Birthday today!, Then hit Tom on the head with a kipper. (tom was her little bother...) Have a go! Or have a big crazy argument about nothing! I don't really mind. |

Perhaps the best idea I have come across in a long time. Thanks, George. I will be stealing it.

This is a great idea, George. I do a very similar thing with songs - claiming that every kids' name is in a song. Of course, many are, so I can often sing the original song - but sometimes there's no song comes to mind, or I'd choose to sing a "silly" song instead. Eg "Mary" -- "We No Speak A-MARY-cano"; "Etta" - "Who-l-ETTA- dogs out"; etc...
And "knock-knock" jokes can be invented about a surprising number of names too. "Ewan" - knock knock - who's there- Ewan- EWAN I need to talk, so open the door....etc Kids love to have their names played with...as David Ginn points out in "KidBiz". I have loads of fun mis-hearing names, and often another child will repeat the name, so I'm able to pretend I think they BOTH have the same silly name, etc.... |

Another thought...
I always end the show by "magically" producing a birthday card (Good ol' Mark Leveridge!)so I could write the limerick in the card - forever immortalizing the little verse! Mark |

Do you really come up with some of these off the top of your head?
I'm not getting very far, I think I need a rhyming dictionary and a book of puns. I've got several variations of Girl named Mira, who swings on the chandalier-a but I haven't got it right. Nevertheless it's such a good idea that once I get it I'll be thrilled.

I think Mira would stump me too. Is it pronounced Mee ra?
I occasionally make it up on the spot. If they're got name tags on I can get a head start I usaully think up the last line first then fill in the middle bit. |

Yes, Mee-rah (my older daughters name)
Potty, that's a good one! I had something like: I once knew a girl named Mira, she would swing from the chandalier-a She smile a big grin as she swung from her chin and say 'it's perfectly safe my dear-a' But I don't know what I think of the last line. I actually saw a rhyming dictionary being given away a while ago at my library. I'm going today to see if it's still there. EDIT: 1) I just did the rhyme for my daughter and she totally cracked up. I guess that one will work for now 2)wanted to share this with everyone: http://www.rhymezone.com/

Limericks are probably easier to invent than you might think. Once you have a few under your belt, lines 3 and 4 can be switched in to many different verses - so in fact, a lot of the time, you only have to think up 2 rhymes for the kids' name. And of course, you can learn lots of obvious ones by rote.
How about some of the most common kids names in the UK right now: 2009 most popular names: Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Alexander, William, Joshua, Daniel, Jayden, Noah, Anthony Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava, Emily, Madison, Abigail , Chloe, Mia 2008 Aiden, Jayden, Ethan, Jacob, Caden, Jackson, Noah, Jack, Logan, Matthew Emma, Sophia, Madison, Isabella, Olivia, Ava, Madeline, Addison, Hailey, Lily I'll start: There once was a young man named Jacob, In the mornings he just couldn't wake up. Except for his Birthday, Got up at six thiry, Ran downstairs, and ate all of his cake up. (maybe someone can do better?) |

There was a young lady called Mira,
Who spoke so softly that noone could hear 'er, She said "The only way, To hear what I say, Is to stoop down and come a bit nearer." Jacob's a hard one to rhyme. I usually just say that I have tried their crackers |

A lady called Mira once said
you lot are all off your head you waste so much time getting my name to rhyme so try it this way instead This is just my way of suggesting that the name of the child doesn't have to be the end word, so if you have a difficult name, place it mid-line and use an easier word let's have a play with some of Potty's names: It's Sophia's birthday today so we're having a party, horay! with Emma and Jayden and Chloe and Aiden and anyone else who can play There was a young lady called Hailey and she was a pest twice daily but at one of his parties Potty yelled "now me harties" "we're all gonna dance to the kailey" (I know it's not spelled like that, I just did that for pronunciation) George, this is a great idea, I like it a lot!! Thanks for sharing Bill
