I think a magician should perform first. If a clown performs first, the audience might be too loose for a magician'n performance. A lot of clowns don't need the whole audience attention because a lot of them do face painting or make balloon scluptures.

I've not been in this situation, but I would imagine it would depend on the clown, magician, and audience.
I wouldn't mind performing for a "loose" audience.

If done right and if the clown is good at what he/she does, then the clown acts as a warm up for you. If the crowd is "loose" so much the better. A good performer will get the crowd intersted and keep them there. If I have to follow this, then hopefully the crowd is already in tuned to have a lot of fun.

As a clown who is also a magician let me address a couple of things....
1. It would depend on what the booker hired the clown to do (magic, clown show or balloon twist) 2. It is usually up to the booker who performs when 3. No matter what kind of magic you do, wouldn't you want the audience warmed up? I wonder if the real issue here is following the clown making it a billing issue? I am sure you are not saying you are better than a professional clown and deserve to go on first.

Good points Neale and nicely said. I agree on most all your points. I think having a clown or a magician warm up the crowd for me is even a better situation to be in.

I would probably want to follow the clown UNLESS:
- it's an audience of pre-schoolers - the room is hot, crowded and stuffy, - the clown goes on and on and on and can't hold the crowd - the crowd is drinking (hey, you never know!) I guess the answer is...it depends. |

I'm not bothered either way, it's not something I worry about. It's the strenght of your performance that's important in the show and something like whether a clown is before or after you shouldn't effect your show.
if the clown goes first and he's good he acts as a warm up for me, if he's bad it makes me look even better. If he goes 2nd I'm not bothered how good he is because I've finished. But he gets the benefit of the well warmed up audience. Surly it's more important to talk to him/her first to make sure your not going to duplicate any gags with the kids, and if so work out who uses what. I did have words (some long, some with only 4 letters)with a clown once who was wandering around a fete and decided to wander into my audience and mess about with the kids during my show. I had to educate him on how it's common curtisy not to mess about during another entertainers performance. He wasn't a proffessional, He was one of those students who go to fete's and open days cheap.
Yours Funfully

If both the clown and magician were doing magic only, I think the best performer should go last. Imagine how much better it would be for the audience to be more enlightened at the end. Sometimes people tell me I should be a clown. The only reason I won't be one is because of the amount of time it takes to put on the make up. One day I tried a rubber mask over my head. It gets too stuffy inside. |

Rambling Nearly Normal Thoughts.
I just go with the flo. When I was newer, I used to hate to go on first. Fear was a big drawback to my growth as a performer. These days it is still there,(smaller but still there) and dealt with in a different way. I have worked with well warmed up crowds as well as overheated one. (July 4, 2003 at the KC Spirit Festival) Good thing they were giving out SPF 45 Sun Screen, or I would have had one pink and hot bald head. I have also worked with crowds who were three sheets to the wind. Some only two sheets.... Working with people under the influence is very interesting. That is why I do not try to get into the comedy club circuit anymore. They are just bars with stages.(IMHO) As far as Clowns go. It is a great art. One of my heroes was/is Red Skelton, America's Clown. A clown has to be a great connector, not just with comedy. A great clown can bring a tear as well as a laugh. Back in Reno, (early 80's)I was asked to fill some pretty big shoes when Mr. Skelton could not make a July 4th Stadium Appearance. The Casino Association asked me to develop and share a mime routine to The Pledge of Allegiance written and Performed(audio) by Mr.Skelton. With the help of some of my friends at the Reno Little Theatre we created a Nearly Normal Routine and shared it at the stadium. It was one of our most humblest moments. One person trying to share another great man's work. Who is on first, Whats on second. I don't know... ..... .... ... all together.. .... Third _ _ _ _. In fact sometimes I call myself a nearly normal clown. I change a coin into a pair of glasses then blow up a balloon for lips, grab the hat and wahlaaah. ... ... .. THE NEARLY NORMAL CLOWN. "When I was a kid I hated to be laughed at. Now that I am a nearly normal clown I hate when people don't laugh at (with) me! Life is very strange and Nearly Normal. Of course the only place where they sometimes have normal is your washing machine. These days I prefer permanent press. Harris Deutsch Laughologist
