Just a quick thought, I am going to need a few things built in the near future. The items are pretty easy, but I don't have the time. So, I am looking for someone relatively close to Chicago or Milwaukee to maybe help me out with a side project or 2....

If you are sorta close, drop me a msg... with your skill set, (ie. welding, etc...) and I'll be able to share some details with you shortly.

You will probably have more luck contacting a local 'cabinet building shop' locally. Most magic builders I have contacted like to build what they want, not to hot on request of any kind. Special projects are not something they really jump on. I have even been turned down on items they have made in the past, and refused to make one again.

If you have the plans or prototype, a good cabinet maker will do superior work for you.

Then if you want your item covered or painted and you do not want to do it yourself, see auto paint shops, sign shops, and upholstery shops or auto interior shops.

Just my experience with special requests of magic makers.

You need to give more insight into what you need made. Is it woodworking, metalworking, mechanics or what? It is pretty wide open.

One reason magic makers shy from these kind of projects is the high level of frustration from them. Someone has an idea but does not 1) know how to accomplish it or 2) as no idea of what processes are needed to make it. There are usually no kind of real plans. It becomes a lot of R&D for the builder to try to get the item working and built.

In the real world, you would go into a shop or manufacturing concern with a highly detailed set of plans that outlined the exact specifications and processes need to make this item. For instance, if you wanted to make a spun metal pan. You would specify the gauge of metal, type of metal, type of finish and number of pieces. Ten Thousand is a normal manufacturing run in the real world. If you did not have a spinning chuck to furnish the spinner, you would have to pay to have one made. Most shops have a $200 to $500 minimum. That little pan you might buy through a magic shop that is currently make them for $25 now costs you upwards of $500 to get made. But you have a lifetime (several) supply.

If you can find a shop as Wm suggest that is willing to do it on the side, that is great. One tip..take cash. It works better most of the time.
