We have between 3,000 and 4,000 trick-or-treaters on my street every year (we close down the street and police provide extra patrols). You can watch the video I made from last year. As you can see, everyone on our street goes all out. We had been doing a Nightmare Before Christmas/Tim Burton inspired theme but need to upgrade since our neighbor built a full-sized pirate ship hull on the front of his house (it folds up and fits in a corner of his garage -- you'll see it on the video).
Not only did I think it would be of interest to folks here, but I'm thinking of building some illusions over the summer, maybe some quick performances while kids are standing in line. I have Paul Osborne's Haunted Illusions, and I've built a head on sword. It has gone over really well in the past. Problem is my teenage son, who used to spend hours doing the head, is off to college. The others are girls who aren't interested in being the "talking head" all night so I'm looking some more performance based type stuff. They will stop and watch and interact. I had another neighbor who built a guillotine and drew quite a crowd, even though he wasn't really magically trained and the performance was lacking. He doesn't do it anymore and it kind of scared the kids. I was thinking about making a Jack-O-Lantern Girl and using my daughter to disappear once every 30 minutes or so. Has anyone built this before? A sword box? Looking for ways to entertain folks who come to our block, while we're handing out our $200 to $300 worth of candy we buy each year. Or should I stick with the yard decorations and do more strolling magic up and down the line while they're waiting? Just looking to brainstorm some ideas from the brain trust on this forum. Suggestions? Tips? Ideas? Go ... |

I want to move. That sounds awesome! Spidora would be a good choice. A friend of mine has built it a couple times and has a great mind reading routine to use with it. PM me if you want more info.

Very cool video dude! Halloween is my absolute favorite time of year for many different reasons. Looks like you all know how to do it up in your neighborhood. Well done,
T.C.
As magicians we create what onlookers call magic. If they truly believe in what we have created for them to witness then magic is real!!!

Some of my favorite Halloween "Porch Illusions" are described in The Wizards' Journal #4 on my site. A particularly easy one is known as the "Return of the Werewolf."

Nicely done!
Sadly, I don't get enough ToTr's to even justify what I do put up, I'm just a Halloween nut. I've found though that I get more mileage out of putting my Flying Crank ghost in the attic window; people gather around on the sidewalk and try to figure out if it's a video, an actor, a puppet.. or whatever.. it's great to see that.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.
