The more interesting part of the story (if true):

The zero-tolerance policies adopted by many schools have seen kids “tossed out for the craziest things,” Mr. Whitehead said in a telephone interview. He cited a greatest hits of seemingly head-scratching insanity: A case where a Grade 4 student who gargled Scope mouthwash after lunch was suspended because it violated the school’s drugs and alcohol policy; a high-school student suspended because the nail clippers he had at school were considered a weapon; even one instance of a youngster bringing a drawing of an uncle, who was then serving in Iraq, carrying his gun, which the school said violated its weapons policy.

The Lunatic's are running the Asylum for sure.

No U.S. source. This is the first I have heard of it.

Everyone's afraid of getting sued in case something bad were to happen.

Therein lies the problem imo...

When I was a kid, as I recall, they used to say, if you don't stop crying, I'll give you something to cry for and I got the the cane for laughing. It all seemed quite reasonable to me at the time and in fact it still does. Smile
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Think about it. No one wants to even seem to have anything to do with anything just in case anything happens.

So they make up ridiculous rules that have to be followed to the letter.

Then take it to ridiculous extents.

Then you get stuff like this.

I lived in a state where tort reform was constantly a topic on the news. It is ridiculous what some people will file a law suit over. It clogs up the courts and costs people time and money. Without tort reform, stupid outcomes like those mentioned above will be the spin-off results of accommodating stupid people.

I have two comments on this story.

1. Zero tolerance policies almost always lead to ridiculous situations.

2. In cases of school problems, it is important to remember that anybody can say whatever they want about the school, but privacy laws prevent schools from saying much of anything. If there is more to the story than meets the press, the school is likely prohibited by law from telling it.

John, while I am a big Canada fan, as you probably know, these privacy laws can sometimes be really stupid. I remember when I applied for a visa to visit Canada I got a call saying I needed to come in for an interview. It was a 45 minute trip there, an hour wait and a 45 minute trip back.
The interview went like this:
Int: Do you want to emigrate to Canada?
Me: Not now, maybe in the future
Int: Oh, because if you want to you have completed the wrong visa form.
Me: I just want a visitors visa.
Int: Ok you can pick it up at the front desk
Me: That's it?
Int: Yes
Me: Wy didn't you just say that on the phone when you phoned me?
Int: I'll leave this blank but you can guess the answer.

ABC: LOL. Half of Canada's charm is its innocent witlessness. Visiting any time soon?

Yea I am wonering also just how much of the story is even being told. Almost without fail when I read the headlines it never really comes up to what I thought it would be. It is sort of like reading 3/4 of a Crighton book. Then end almost always disapoints.

I think they try to tell stories with headlines now instead of doing... oh I forget what it is called... yea reporting or investigating. Yea that was what it was called. Used to be big prior to USA Today and the invention of the investigative paragraph.

That's why I'm looking for another source, to get more of the story. But I agree with John, zero tolerance policies are generally idiotic, and come from admins who are too lazy to actually think. It reminds me of people who call for "excellence." It's just bs from people who don't know much about human organizations and are looking for quick fixes and snappy slogans.

That's the due process you love so much in action. ZT policies protect from those arbitrary and capricious decisions; everyone is subject to the exact same clearly delineated standard - discretion leaves the door wide open for abuse.
