I'm really happy with Schoolcraft's (and please I'm not interested on why someone else is better) - I'm trying to learn more about it. My main concern that it only uses gaffs (no "strings").. Any thoughts?
Thanks David

David,
I'm not sure what you mean by "strings". Also, are you concerned about using gaffs in general? If so then why use them at all? Jim |

Jim,
I only use gaffs - (just a hobbyist -sorry) - I mean a "thread" I hope someday I will be able to do more then simple palms, but that's all I can get these hands to do... David

Welcome to the Café David Superfly still uses sleight of hand. The only advantage over non-gaffed is that it gives slightly cleaner displays (of only three coins) at a couple of points in the routine. If you watch Kenner do 3 fly ungaffed and then with the $600 dollar superfly, even a magician would be hard pressed to spot the difference. If your looking for a gaffed set that takes out the sleight of hand then this is not it.
As for learning the basics before spending a fortune on gaffs, well that's another whole discussion Regards Sean |

Hey buddy (rdwinc), I would suggest getting a hold of Kenner's "Totally Out of Control" book and learning the original Three-Fly routine first. If you can do this routine then SuperFly will be within your ability range. The properties of the SuperFly coin set enable one to have a couple ultra-clean displays; but as was mentioned earlier, there are a couple times in the routine where one needs to be able to employ a bit of sleight-of-hand (i.e. it's not a totally self-working routine). The timing aspects and other bits of finesse of both routines (orginal and SF), as Kenner mentioned in his book, are what really make or break the trick; so even the special properties of the SF coins don't get rid of the ample amount of time required to make the routine look great.
Most people would probably argue that the high price tag of the SF set is not worth the couple instances when one can have a super clean display of nothing else hiding in one's hands. I think that SF is about as good as it gets, though, so I feel that it was a good investment. I equate SF with Hollingworth's "Reformation." There are a couple times in Guy's torn and restored trick where there is a lot of work involved simply to serve as a sort of convincing aspect of the illusion. However, I feel that it's these extra bits of subtle details which turn those tricks into masterpieces. There isn't a huge night-and-day difference between SF and the original (or other three fly routines), just as there isn't a huge difference between "Reformation" and other torn and restored tricks. But if you're looking for a couple perfect routines regardless of the time/energy/money requirement, then I'd say go for it. Lastly, there are some other threads here at the TMC pertaining to SuperFly. I'd advise reading those carefully, since there are differences regarding the ability to hand out the coins. I rarely hand out the coins at the beginning of the SF routine, and I vanish all coins (ala a holdout) at the end, so it's a nonissue for me; but looking into this aspect would probably be a good idea. Good luck deciding. Best, MJ |

R Paul Wilson has an awesome sleight-of-hand version of 3-Fly on one of his DVD's. Check out Hocus-Pocus. I purchased it plus the write up Paul offers at his website in order to learn his "Sunday Morning Sequence." Get some worn/slick coins and the instructional material and you'll have a routine that will last you a lifetime.

Mark Mason's "Come Fly With Me" is probably easier to perform than Chris Kenner's Superfly and it is gaffed to the hilt.

Which is "gaffed to the hilt" - Come Fly with Me or Superfly?

Gary Jones and Chris Congreave have a DVD entitled, Flying Tonight. This is dedicated to Coins Across and features gaffed and ungaffed versions of 3fly type routines. A good investment BEFORE you spend big bucks on gaffs.
I recommend it highly if you are interested in researching and learning 3fy routines. cp

Rd, welcome to the Café.
I know you like the gaff stuff and there's nothing wrong with that but what sean says simply enough here is more true than not, truth be told. SuperFly may indeed be a nice set of trick coins but I believe you can learn Kenner's original 3Fly easy enough and it pretty much looks the same. Yes, it takes practice but what are we without practice in just about anything? You can do it man. Give it a try. You can always go and get a gaffed version, some mentioned here are pretty cool too.

I'm with you as always, Marion.
Now when magicians with less experience or with a different background start with the gaffed end of the art, they can come with new ideas with some of the gaffs they bought for totally different effects. This was the case with the shell and the folding coin. it is now with the flipper and the TUC. Now even if I agree that regular coins are more versatile, do not require to be selected in advance, and that the effects are perceived similarly by spectators, I think that it's not very important how our magician friends get deeper into our beautiful art as long as they have fun at it and put serious work into improving with it ;)

MB - I'm taking you advice - off to find some nice worn (soft) Morgans. It's time to learn it the right way - right?
Thanks for all the inspiration! David
