So I've been thinking about seances. How do you guys (or do you) categorize the various seance options?
Here's my working list, what do you think? -PSYCHOLOGICAL +sitters contact loved ones and/or spirit guides directly for comfort, healing or messages in their own mind. -LIGHT SEANCE +Readings --Medium's spirit guide gives sitters readings, and/or --Medium deliver's readings and messages from sitters loved ones or guides +Demonstrations (optional) --mentalism, hypnotism, etc. with a spiritualist presentation -LOW LIGHT SEANCE +Visual Spirit Manifestations --ectoplasm and/or --visual overshadowing of the medium -DARK SEANCE +spirits manifest directly to sitters (physically, visually and/or psychologically) --medium may or may not give readings from his/her spirit guide or sitter's loved ones. -MIXED +using elements of any or all of the above -THEATRICAL +any of the above, possibly excepting the psychological seance, presented for entertainment using either physical or psychological trickery.

It seems you have given this a great deal of thought. The list seems to be quite inclusive and it works for me. Personally I never catagorize my work and just do it.

It's very useful because it helps you to know exactly what you want to accomplish for each type of seance.
I started out as a teacher in my "other life", back in the days when every teacher simply taught the same way they had been taught, and no one really questioned if that was a good way to teach students or not. We did it because that's the way it had always been done. Then in the 70's teachers began questioning the various approaches, and which ones actually helped students learn. The old fogies didn't want some young whippersnapper from "away" coming in and telling them how to teach, by dang it! But in explaining the process and categorizing the ways students learn and matching them up against various ways of teaching, I could see myself and many of the younger teachers gradually changing their styles and being given a LANGUAGE to talk about what was happening and why it worked. So this categorizing of magic or seances (to make my eternally long story a bit shorter) helps you to quantify what it is you do. Now you can talk to others about it more knowledgably and if you make changes, you will have reasons for making those changes, not just hunches or guesses about what you are doing. Keep on keeping on!

Well, then you can also ad more sub-divisions/catagories
Victorian Recreation Seance Modern Technology based seance Spook-show (not a seance per se but then you can focus what your goal really is) Spirit Magic Outdoor seance Hybrid Seance (which is usually what we do - a mix of many on the lists posted here) and many more...

When I said I don't catagorize I meant publically. Certainly I include the catagorization in the structuring of the presentation. It affects everything otherwise it is just another "here's another trick" thing.

Good sub-divisions.
[modern Technology based seance] I had an idea for a low-light steampunk seance. It would include visual spirit overshadowing, recording instruments, orb photography, radionics and spirit lamps. It could include a semi-scientific lecture on radionic/pineal gland/extraterrestrial/orgone/noise/color spirit communication. It's not something I actually plan on doing, but it comes into my head now and again and it seems like it would be fun.

It is good to consider size when classifying seances. The smallist would be working a Ouija board (or a mouth-down glass on a table top) with one to six participants engaged in the proceedings. Up from there is the table seance with participants seated around a table and perhaps an outer circle or two beyond that. And then there is the spiritualist church model with the medium addressing a seated group ranging from a few folks to a thousand or more.

Ah, I hadn't considered size (mostly because I don't do that many seances, so they are all small), good point that seems like it would dramatically alter a presentation.

Yes, size of presentation and venue is a vital issue to consider when putting together a seance. Success with a seance has so much to do with establishing the right mood and rapport with the participants, and it becomes much more of a challenge with larger groups of people.
