"We should go to London for the Royal Wedding," my wife says.
I make a completely uninterested noise at the back of my throat. I am envisioning myself trapped in big crowds waiting patiently for a glimpse of two people I don't even know who are about to get married. "It's history in the making," she continues. "Think of the people who will be in London then! Think of the pictures we'll get!" (We're both photographers, my wife and I. We travel...a lot.) "But the Royal Wedding? Seriously?" I start. (I am thinking about the bills we racked up going to South Africa for nearly a month last year.) We discuss my lack of foresight in putting paying bills ahead of having a new adventure for a little while. In the end we decide that I have been in error all along (surprisingly!). It turns out I am actually excited about going to London around the time of the Royal Wedding. (Although my invitation hasn't arrived yet.) Who knew? Not me... Anyway when in London, I go to Davenport's. Of course...partially because that's what you do...and partially since going there always reminds me of seeing something out of Harry Potter. What else, of a magical or mentalist nature, should I consider while in London? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you. David

Under normal circumstances I'd say the both of you join me for a beer or two opposite International Magic (much better than Davenports in my opinion) - BUT - because of the Royal Wedding - I'm off in the opposite direction (to my Bro's canal boat) embracing a full media blackout!
Watch your valuables - our crims will be out in force and the great unwaswhed are threatening to disrupt proceedings. Other than that - welcome to London! |

Hi David,
If you're a Sherlock Holmes fan (and who isn't?), you should go to the Sherlock Holmes museum on Baker St. It's just a very short distance down the street from the actual 221b Baker St. address (I believe the actual building is an insurance company... there's a plaque on the wall about Sherlock Holmes). Wish I were going to London :-( Regards, Steve

From liverpool street station - hop on the number 11 bus, it'll take you through aldwych, covent garden, westminster and up to Victoria station...you'll pass a lot of landmarks, hop off wherever it takes your fancy (buy a one day travel card - £6) and remember to look UP! people are too busy in the hussle and bussle of life - look up and you will see beautiully carved gargoyles and architecture most overlook...
good pubs in westminster - walkers of whitehall and the old monk...about a 15 minute walk between the two... from around that area alone, a twenty minute walk will get you to trafalgar square, covent garden, and a few other places... for pub-grub, go to the coal-hole in aldwych..try an english meat pie and very strong beer! from liverpool street station you can walk for five minutes down Gun Street, and find yourself in Hoxton, on the corner of Fournier rd (or is it street? cant remember) is a church, and next to it is The Ten Bells...the infamous pub where the prostitutes used to get their gin and absinthe and where the Ripper cut one up...tiny place, now usually full of trendy students...

Steve: I am a MAJOR Holmes fan. We went there the last time we were in London and found the whole experience quite wonderful. There's a brass statue of Holmes examining strange paw prints on the moors on my desk.
We prevailed upon our hosts to take us out to Minstead where Doyle is buried. It was quite wonderful. Someone had placed a broken meerschaum pipe on the headstone. It looked as though it had been there a long time. Iain: thank you very kindly for the recommendations! This time I am taking my camera AND my wife on the Ripper walk. I have two reasons for this. First...since she's dragging me to the royal wedding thingie, she owes me at least one Ripper walk. Second: I have a great idea for an effect set along that walk -- something significantly tamer than "From Hell." What is the best magic shop in London? Also: are there any good shows on-going? Great performers working restaurants to see? I appreciate the advice. Thank you all very much. David

International Magic is far better in my opinion, but I rarely go in either to be honest...
http://www.internationalmagic.com/ http://www.madamejojos.com/calendar/ http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ - great for planning journeys, times, and travel delays/problems... http://www.lyric.co.uk/whats-on/ for food: Four seasons in chinatown (the crispy duck) http://www.kasliksoho.com/Kaslik/Kaslik.html - one of my favourite places to eat the india hotel - its in aldwych, where ghandi ate when he visited, a tiny basic place, but superb..or a few doors down, Sitar - for all your curry needs and I guess Fire & Stone for something in the way of pizza

When are you going to be there exactly? Derren Brown's new Svengali show is touring – Oxford, Sunderland and Edinburgh around the wedding.
(I sure wouldn't set foot on a continent where Derren Brown was performing and not go see him!) |

Hi David,
Had the same grand experience at the Holmes museum myself, when we were there. If you haven't already been, then you really need to visit Madame Tussauds, right around the corner from Holmes, at the Baker Street tube station. You might also enjoy the Jack-The-Ripper walking tour. I loved it, even though my feet were screaming at me. Have a safe and enjoyable trip. Hope you see some great shows while you're there. Remember to share when you get back. |

Michael: We are going on a Ripper walking tour. I was unable to make it last time...and this year we ARE going.
Colin: That's good to hear because every time we've been in London it's been gray and wet...or gray and snowy. Once it was just gray and cold. Iain: Thank you again! I really like pubs. A lot. Barry: I would really REALLY love to go to that lecture. Is there a way for someone from WAY out of town to go to it? I'd appreciate any information you could forward to me. That could be the highlight of the trip. You guys rock! Thank you all very much. I appreciate your help. David

Iain's so right about looking up when in London.
If you haven't been before you might enjoy a glass of wine in the restaurant of the National Portrait for the Mary Poppins style view... http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/restaurant......urant.do I also like Iain's idea of doing the number 11 bus route. I had my 27th birthday party along the 37 bus route from Chiswick to Camden taking in pubs in Hammersmith, Notting Hill, um some other places, and ending up in the Crown and Goose in Camden. What area of London are you staying in?
