I find this size so much more practical than the larger cantilever boxes mentioned at the top of this thread. Those might be good for permanent storage of close-up kit - but I can't imagine using them when performing. The reason I made this case up, is so that I can always carry a selection of close-up magic, which is instantly and easily accessible, and there is a good size mat to perform the tricks on. I frequently show a couple of close-up effects to older kids and parents, when attending Birthday and Family parties...so this is where the case will come in. All my close-up gigs are walkabout, so for those I carry all my props in either my pockets, High Caliber Holster, or clip-on carriers such as the JOL or Joshua Jay ones.
The funny thing is, I was prepared to shell out quite a lot of cash, if needed, to get an appropriate case. But none of the "professional" close-up cases offered exactly what I was looking for: many were too heavy or too large; some had drawers which looks good at first sight, but would not be as workable for my purposes; but this simple solution fits the bill perfectly! |

Potty Do you have legs for the case? How would you "use" it? That is, on a table, some kind of stand, tripod???? Thanks |

The large "Hobby-Case" holds all the props that I take with me for the strolling performance.
On arrival I transfer the contents to my pockets. It's lightweight and the upper tray is already sectioned; the base is spacious enough for larger items eg chop cup. Bought mine from Aldi - less than a fiver !! http://www.powellplastics.co.uk/hobbycase_large.html Stick with what works. |

I really like Potty's approach to the close up case because I used a standard Lefler suitcase table for my kid shows and sometimes, like Potty mentions, before or after the show, some folks might ask for another trick one on one. With Potty's case, it's a simple matter of opening a nice organized case to pluck something out.
However, I also like wmhebli's find of a makeup case because I tend to like doctor bags for closeup, though I don't have one. The makeup case seems superior to the doctor bag, which are getting extremely expensive to purchase. I could go either way on this, but I'm going to get one of them for sure.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I'm feeling the Samsonite case. Doesn't get more organized than that. My order is IN!

The only reason I ask is that mine is seventeen inches in length and yours seems shorter in relation to the size of the decks. I like that you can carry that in a close up case, that's the only reason I'm asking the question. I'm more curious about whether the effect comes in different sizes. Not that I'm going to buy a second one, but I'm more curious. Thanks!

Here's a take on Potty's idea. I liked his so much, I found this in the fishing tackle department of K-Mart. The manufacturer is Plano and they make durable tackle boxes of all kinds. This one cost $19 and can be set up to your specific needs. I like Potty's idea of the close up mat too, so I just included a pic with one on top of the case. Not sure if it would work well, but I have to play with that a little

I have a humidor that I have converted into a case. Its 9"x8.5"x2.5" has a real nice reddish wood finish on the outside and cedar inside. The only things I did was remove the humidity gauge, and attached a close-up pad on its top. Its a little small but works nice for strolling and table hopping.

Hey Ottphd, yea, that case is so super practical. and the best thing is after a show, I can offer to change oil or do some bicycle tune ups with the tools in the bottom drawer.
Prophet - Very classy and elegant choice. I'll have to run out and get one also. Perhaps PK under the lid. Great idea overall. I can't seem to get into tackle boxes or anything plastic. Housing expensive props in a fine wood box seems more of a fit to me rather a box for screws and electrical fittings - unless you just happen to be a magician and a journeyman. |

What was even better with my case is that it was free, my friend got a bigger humidor and was just going to throw this one out. Here is a link to some good priced humidors, some have dividers or trays in them also. http://www.cigarsinternational.com/catDisp.asp?cat=10

Thanks for the link Prophet! Really nice wood cases - Using this kind of box is clever and presents a great polished presentation. Yep, this look works.

Awesome link Prophet. Some of the free standing cabinets like the Tower of Power, would make excellent display cabinets. And all of the drawers for card decks and coins. Just the piece of furniture for the magic room.
Now how to justify it with a kid going into college...think, think, think.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

When I started this forum, my thought was for close-up magicians to carry the tricks they know to an event they are performing, such as a restaurant or bar. There are times when there will be regulars at the business, a case you can take a few extra tricks to show the regulars, is a nice way to break in new routines.
I have been had tons of magic, and I will say, buying any kind of container to display the tricks is money wasted. Tricks are useless unless they are shown to an audience. If you want to store them, just place them in a plastic bag with the instructions and seal. This will keep them like new. Then put in a plastic bin or footlocker. The nice thing with the case I referenced is that you can use this as an easy accessible case to each trick. If you have, say the Silver, Copper, Brass trick in one of the sectioned bins, then all you have to do is grab it and put it in your pocket. You don't have to search around a bunch of stuff, just to find all the parts. If at a formal close-up show, then it can be on the floor, next to you. You don't have try and use your pockets. Also you can carry that Chop Cup you don't use all the time, because you can't carry it easily from table to table. |

Welll then, how about tailored suit and one large beige cotton fanny pack. And might as well throw everything in a milk crate. If we want to get uber practical and frugal - then I say a grocery bag, and not even double bagged -ohhhhhhhh.
