Hello all again, I'm in the middle of trying to develop my image more, and to differentiate myself. My full name is David Ranalli. As you all know, there are SEVERAL magicians named David. I want to set myself a part. Recently at a gig there was a girl, who is a huge fan of magic, suggested I go ONLY by Ranalli. I was very intrigued by the idea and was hoping to get some opinions.
If I only go by Ranalli, which does sound somewhat magiciany, I'm assuming I should elaborate by using a tagline. Would anyone be willing to provide some creative insight? Thanks! David |

I like the name RANALLI, sounds very good.I also like the idea of a tagline as an identifier and positioning statement. I too have a tagline but mine was given to me over the years and kind of just stuck. You tagline should describe who you are or what you do. Your USP.

Rinalli is not a bad name and sounds pretty cool as a entertainers brand. You just have to make sure that you brand it well enough via brand look and brand message so that folks get to know the name. It is also going to be important that folks know how to spell the name so that it is easier for them to find you via search engines etc.
My full name is Kyle Peron. No one ever remembers Peron because it is not pronounced the way it is spelled. Because of this, I changed our stage name a long time ago by not utilizing my last name at all. We now go by “The Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelly.” This works amazingly well for us because the names of Kyle and Kelly are so easy to recognize and recall. The brand recognition is really great. I know this works because I track it all the time. People going to my site a lot of times simply do a search fr key words like “Kyle Magic, Kyle and Kelly Magic” etc. When they do, our website is ranked #1. Now I abck up this stage name with effective branding. My logo is designed and clearly states the stage name clearly and easily. It is used on everything including signage at the shows and on my cases and performance table. So I think Rinalli works really well if you can establish the brand and use a tag line that works with what you do. Tell us a bit more about your magic, the type of magic you do, the markets you perform for and what makes you unique. This way we may be able to help you establish a tagline that works for who you are and what you offer. Kyle

(not being a jerk, it was just ironic)If I went with Ranalli then I would definitely be buying up a lot of domain names. I actually recently was forwarded a recommendation someone had made via email to an event planner. He spelled the link to my site as Renalli instead of Ranalli (www.davidranalli.com). I definitely never thought of the idea of just going with David, but there are a lot of Davids in magic. I'm also quite annoyed with hearing, "Hey you should change your last name to Blaine!" Anyway, as far the magic I do, I do a lot of close up stuff (as my user name suggests) and parlor. I don't do stage illusions with big boxes and dancers. My close up magic is a lot of interactive stuff using cards, coins, and borrowable objects. The effects are a lot of classics like Ambitious card, cups and balls, etc. However, I always add my own twists to them, and there are quite a few routines I do that rely heavily on misdirection similar to the styles of Tommy Wonder or Arthur Trace. My parlor has a lot of demonstrative material also, but I also do a lot of mind reading and less "sleight of handy" type stuff. I like to do more "experiments" in parlor so I'm performing with them and not at them. I'm filming my parlor show this Sunday, so hopefully I can get more information to you all by then. However, your help would be appreciated because it might help me in the process of theming the video. As for my personality, I try to be humorous, charming, and personable. I do not like to use degrading lines or jokes at an audience members expense. I want them to be happy to have met me and feel like they have a new friend. I always make sure that my dress is modern with a classic feel. I wear nice vests, suits, and ties. Even when I'm not performing I always try to look well put together. Because I try to abide by a more upscale type of image, I did sort of want to stray away from the word magician. I think if I used something like Illusionist, it would create different images in the audience's minds that will help them view my magic in the way I want them to. I really want to turn myself into a distinguishable performer in my audiences minds. I don't want to be thought of as "the magician," like we are a dime a dozen. Any advice you guys can throw my way would be great. Thanks again! Dave |

LOL Well then that certainly will be an issue to think about and address. The spelling of the name can be changed if you feel it will be easier for folks to recall and spell. The domain name idea is a good one as you can have it auto send someone to another address. This could cover you if folks misspell it. Now some folks also use a combination of first name and middle name. Just an option to think about.
I would be careful of using the word “illusionist”. In the mind of the consumer, it suggests someone who does stage magic with large illusions. Now a tagline could be utilized with the word in it but handled a bit differently. For example.. Ranalli Illusions Up Close an Personal Just an idea of how it could be utilized and not give the wrong connotation. Kyle

I think Laymen do associate Illusionist with stage illusions. That is why I developed the tagline for you. This way you are not really saying illusionist. You are saying you create illusions that are personal to people. It allows people to fill in the blanks and showcases your close up as well as parlor approach.

My web site is just up with only two pages; it was one of the first things I did when I went into the Vent business.
Ten years ago a domain name was easy, you just got it. Today you really have to be creative, especially if you have an easily misspelled name. I went the easy way http://www.NotMovingMyLips.com I capitalize the first letter of each word and use a different color on the Caps; easy reading Everyone I talk to says Ventriloquist as soon as I mention it My tag line is “My lips are not moving and there is nothing up my sleeve” It all ties together and the added feature; when I’m too old to lift my hand to work Dan, I can sell the web domain, if I am any good by then. |
