I am in search for some advice here for a magic trick that will help with an area in my new summer camp program.
I am looking for a trick or idea to help present courage. If any of you could give me some ideas that would be great. I was thinking of using the following. However if there is something better I would love to hear about it. Some type of smash and stab, however I feel it might be a bit much. Finger chopper – Not sure this will pack the punch I want to illustrate courage. Here is the dilemma; the age group is from 14 – 22. The idea is to illustrate how having courage to face your fears will help you become successes in life. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Floyd

Here's a few ideas to look about that we use about TRUST
- Disecto / arm-chopper (David Ginn)- I'm doing this one tomorrow in Abu Dhabi; - Guillotine(David Ginn); - rope through (my favourite from Tarbell); - liquid over head in an upturned plastic cup, remove the instruction card; - any trick that involves blind-folding the volunteers. (As a game I split the group into two. One is blindfolded, the others have to give directions to navigate them around an assault course made up of chairs etc); - head dagger cabinet(David Ginn); - sword cabinet (with a trained volunteer)(David Ginn); - spinning plates and juglging (Steve Harmer); - hand through stomach (e-book, sorry can't remember where I saw it) Hope this is useful.

I think that most of the suggestions are going in an unhelpful direction. Perhaps we can brainstorm a bit. What kind of courage are you wanting to promote?
I'll give a couple of examples that you might like, and then let's put our heads together to come up with an effect. You might wish to have a routine on the courage to stand up for your beliefs. How about the courage to withstand (peer) pressure? Or the courage to defend someone in trouble? Do any of these themes appeal to your purpose? John

The camp works on self esteem and getting kids to have the courage to do the right thing even when no one is looking. I have my routine list for all the other areas I need to cover, however the courage one seems to be hard to dig something up that fits well. I would also like to spin some humor into it as well. --Floyd

Excellent. Which one do you want to explore first? I don't have any effects in mind, but I thought it might be helpful if I shaped the discussion.
So what's on first John

Trusting that a magician is not gonna chop off your arm is a far cry from being courageous. I agree that heading in another direction is warranted.
How old are the kids you will be working for? |

Hummm....I struggle with this one. I see doing the right thing even when no others are looking as more a matter of self-discipline, rather than courage.

I guess the type of courage I am trying to present would be to not let limitations stop you. That even if you have failed in the past you need the courage to keep going and concur your fear of failure.
Michael - I agree that is self-discipline, may not be a good example however that is one of the goals of this camp. I was given that as an example and a lot character building they do. Starrpower, I agree I was not crazy about using that type of effect. The age group is 14 – 22 I was thinking of doing something that is most likely to fail then pull myself out of it showing that my courage to keep going has made everything that went wrong right. Maybe a magician in trouble type routine might work and I could script it to fit my needs. hummmmmmm something to think about. Thanks guys for the help.

You could shape Barry Mitchell's "Mother Of All Diamonds" to illustrate courage of conviction in the face of mockery from peers. You might have to "grow it up" some as it is usually presented in a story telling fashion that might be too elementary for the age group you described.

John,
The structure of my motivational shows is I talk a little bit about the target topic. I then perform a magic effect to help illustrate what I just spoke about. So yes I can weave in a story line trick no problem. I will check out the video, but I think Steve Heart told me about this once before I guess I never put it in my notes. I would have to re script anything I do so I will see if this would fit the age group. Floyd Edit- Nice trick but I don't think it will fit my needs. I already have a spring bill trick in the lineup so I don't think this would fit. Thanks for the suggestion guys.

You could get 2 of these?
Hmm. Maybe not appropriate and a tenuous link. I'm in a weird mood tonight. What is your definition of courage? In this life sometimes it's better to run away as fast as you can. |

George, that is some funny stuff, I am with ya man but yeah not in this kind of show.
I think I have what I will do now.. I am going to do the five card repeat, I will build it up as when I did my first magic trick, kind of like my opener for my regular show. But I will script it so it is more in line with not stopping and just keep going till you get it right. Having the courage to do that and not give up. I think that will fit well if I script it right. Thanks Everyone for helping jar my head a little. Floyd

Floyd don't stop yet. I suspect you could make a cut and restored rope work with your theme.
And what about the Hindu Thread? In both cases, we can break under difficult circumstances, but find the strength and courage to become whole again. John

Thanks John
I plan on using the gypsy thread to sum everything up at the end. Cut and restored rope I had never thought of using that hummmmm. Now you have me thinking again. Floyd

Do you have "Tales of Enchantment" by Walt Anthony (aka Spellbinderentertainment here on the Café)?
If not, you should. If you do, turn to page 65 and read his excellent routine called "The cloak of great courage." It might be just what your looking for.

Hello Floyd,
maybe use the trick "Professors Nightmare/ Unequal Ropes". You could talk about feeling too small to reach big goals and about big heroes like Martin Luther King and others. And then you bring the message across that the big heroes believe and say that there is a hero in everyone (ropes become the same length). Daniel |

There is a very entertaining and great comedy version of needle through balloon on one of Mel Mellers first two DVD's where he talks all about facing one's fears and phobias. Might be worth looking at.
