I finally took the plunge and got an Android powered smart phone. Which of you guys has had one for a while, and how do you get the most out of it? What apps are your favorite? Any special tips or tricks I should know about?

Loving mine. I'm using it right now! Get Swype if your phone doesn't already have it. It makes texting almost as fast as typing.
In no particular order: Google Reader (news) Barcode Reader Google Sky View Astro File Manager (for a simple, powerful "tree" file system) Evernote (WAY more versatile than most people think...) Astrid "To Do" (good project planner/ to do list) Sound Hound (music recognition program) Photobucket app (great features that link simply to various accounts) Vignette Camera app (lots of fun filters and effects) Quick Settings (get this! Many obscure settings neatly placed all in one menu) Appbrain Market (good reviews and filters of the VAST google app mkt) Hope this gets you started!

Thanks Gaddy! Yeah, the phone was only .01 and came with free priority shipping. What could I do? I was tempoarily rendered helpless. LOL
I just downloaded about half of your list. You're right, the Quick Settings looks very user friendly. I do have Swype, but still in the learning curve. So far my fav app is PDAnet, which tethers the phone to my laptop. Very nice. I guess the point now is to see how much of this can replace the laptop. |

What?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Make sure you have a good idea about how all your various accounts can sync and work together so your phone can optimize how it notifies you and where it gives you the options to share and upload data.
A few more Fun apps: Convertdroid (measurement converter) Groupon (daily discounts on restaurants and other things) Stumbleupon (tour the internet randomly based on your selected preferences) 3G Watcher (monitors your wireless data usage and gives warnings)

How did you know I had Verizon? You really are magic! LOL
I have the unlimited plan, so no worries there. But I got the 3G watcher anyway just learn more about usage in general. Set it to 5G's as a test. Here's some fun stuff that I ran across Ulysse Gizmo (VERY cool multi-function digital compass) Pandora Radio Maverick (Cool GPS style compass that uses Google maps) Digital Stopwatch City ID (identifies callers) Easy Uninstaller (one click uninstall) FM Radio Free Memory (disk cleaner) Scanner Radio (listen to emergency channels) Surveyor (laser ruler) TaskKiller (one click to kill background apps to save the batt.) Virtual Recorder (digital recorder that resembles an old school tape deck, but not so great quality) Voice Recorder (Much better quality voice recorder) |
