Interesting video of Helen Kane (who was immortalized as Betty Boop in the Fleischer cartoons) and Skeets Gallagher. It's from the 1929 movie Pointed Heels and it depicts a vaudeville act from the era. I love the artistry of Gallagher's drunk, and wonder if it was an influence on Cardini.

The "drunken gentleman" plot, generally, is older than both of them.
Remember the phrase "drunk as a lord"? That dates back to at least the 1600's...

Wow, didn't know Cardini went back that far. Also, Chaplin's City Lights (c. 1930 IIRC??) has a similar character in top hat and tails.
