I read it and I like Darwin's version a lot better. I show both of them to my friends and they where fried with Drawin's.

Uli, thanks for reminding me about that arguement. I re-read it and I agree that Darwin brings up some excellent points. He really didn't bash Name a Card Triumph, he just said it's more of a magician's trick, which I agree with.

Just thought I'd point out that Jerry Sadowitz used Darwin's argument in Strong Magic as a presentational ploy on the TV show "Stuff the White Rabbit."
He began by bringing out the book and saying that the author criticised Sadowitz's effect and that Sadowitz wanted to perform it so the audience could decide. Sadowitz does the effect - which is very good - then asks them what they think of Ortiz. The audience all call out one of Sadowitz' catch phrases, which is unprintable here without the mighty moderators getting wall-eyed. It is a VERY funny sequence. By the way. I have seen a letter from Sadowitz to Ortiz in which he expressed his sincere admiration for Strong Magic, though he disagreed with some of the views expressed. He added that he used the book to get a laugh on the TV show and added words to the effect that he hoped Darwin wouldn't be offended as it was merely a presentational device. (Darwin was NOT offended - he still buys and enjoys the Crimp and often reads passages over the phone to me that he finds humourously offensive). Of course, Sadowitz has since fallen out with Darwin over a ludicrous crediting issue (just as he has fallen out with Gene Maze, Matt Fields, Richard Kaufman and others over another loony crediting issue). But the fact remains that the TV show in which he 'slammed' the book was not as black and white as the magician rumour mill likes to make it out. I hope this has helped. I also agree with Uli Weigel - a lot of people need to actually absorb the text, rather than skimming it without fully understanding the argument being made. It's also okay to disagree with that argument - or ANY VIEW expressed by any other famous magician. Just make sure you really (honestly) understand why you hold a certain view... Best Andrew

Garrett Thomas has a very cool name any card triumph in his lecture notes. I've just started using this one. It totally catches other magicians off gaurd. Oh by the way it is one of the eaisiest triumph routines I've ever seen that gets so much impact out of it.

Hi JasonDean,
Garrett's is awesome but Marlo (as usual) had the idea first. He even took it one step further so it was instantly reset-able.

A few quick comments. "Marlo had the idea first" so he says, he had the isea first on every thing didn't he? In my opinion Jerry is right to fall out with the people he did over the crediting issues. If you are clearly a knowlegable magician and you have clearly read around you should not try and pass someones material off as your own (obviously) again another reference to Marlo.
When I saw the name a card it totally blew my mind. I was unfamiliar with the false shuffle and I thought it was amazing. I saw the Vernon triumph but being a magician I knew there was a control, however the Sadowitz one looked like real magic. |

don't quite see why you are bashing charliec and his marlo statement http://www.marlophile.com/trickarchive.html Jon Racherbaumer posted the marlo effect there |

Jerry does go a bit loopy over crediting. That is only because he feels many people have 'borrowed' his moves and other stuff without any references to him. Also this 'new' bok coming out, is without his permission and he is not very happy. He originally sold the guy five seperate booklets and rights to them on the cheap. These five booklets have been shoved together to create a book, he said that is not how he wanted or intended them to be sold.

Isn't there a named card Triumph in Complete Walton (possibly Vol 2)? Anyone knows how it compares to Sadowitz'?

Hey I've went to http://www.marlophile.com and most of the links are down. I emailed Jon Racherbaumer ages ago about this and he never replied. This is a disgrace to the memory of Marlo.

Maxim, they are not down since they were never up. Hold your horses til he actually goes public with that site and says that it's finished. I believe http://www.jonracherbaumer.com (which I can't recommend enough) takes his time along with everything else he does.

I think he should just take the Marlophile site down. It's been incomplete for years.

I'd rather see it finished. Maybe if we all emailed him he might take interest in it again? I thought this guy loved Marlo!
