I know there are some excellent effects with cards using gaffs. There are effects that you can't do without them. It seems as though you practice these effects, get good with them then down the road the gaffs are discontinued. What a waste of time. I realized this early in my performing career. I realized I didn't want to fork over cash every month at a magic shop to replace these cards either.
Does anyone else feel this way? |

It depends on the effect. Most of the best effects, though, come from the utilitarian gimmicks -- double facers, double backers, etc.
Even if the trick eventually goes by the wayside, that doesn't mean it was a waste of time. |

What will you do when someone says "Let me see those cards"?

I still enjoy performing Michael Skinners Ultimate Three Card Monte form time to time. The folks in the neighborhood are use to seeing me perform a lot of sleight of hand effects. I pull out this effect and they say" Man you have gotten good at those cards."
Those moments are priceless! |

I have to agree with depending on the effect, for example Entourage, Twisited Sister, Twisted Angels and DB's forme yeah I love these and hope they never do.

Short of the odd double backer I don't use gaffed cards. Too risky. Most gaffed card tricks "excite those kinds of questions". Unless you work for an extremely polite, unquestioning type of audience. |

I suppose sayin "waste of time" makes me sound like a brat. These people pour there hearts out to write these effects. Then they share them with the world so we can enjoy them and perform them for others. Its not their fault these cards are sometimes hard to find.
I shouldnt take things for granted. My mistake. Magic is a beautiful art form. |

I didn't have the money for gaffed cards (whatever gaffs were around way back then) so had no choice, had to use regular cards. How lucky can you get?
And, if I take out my own deck to do some stuff for my friends, they laugh. So, I never carry my own deck, or any gaffs.

Kasper,
The only fake I use is a Thick Card. However, don't totally discount gimmicks. Both Alex Elmsley and Brother John Hamman produced miracles with them.

I have used Michael Skinner's Ultimate 3 Card Monte for years and have yet been asked to see the cards.

You sure as h@ll never used it for any of the people I do magic for. Of course it all boils down to who, where, milieu, talent. (I'm asked to do my version of Monte Plus Plus - I'm upgrading it for a new book, of new stuff, I may or may not be doing - it blows people away, and they can ask to see the cards as often as they like - because they are their cards!

Caruk,
Anyone who walks up to a table and rips out a gimmicked card trick right out of the gate deserves what he gets. As I mentioned, if you're doing these tricks in a way that excites those kinds of questions, you're doing something wrong. That something wrong may be not laying down a proper foundation for that effect first. If you do, by the time you get to that trick, you have the conviction you need. Another thing possibly wrong is in selecting effects that scream that some gimmickry is in play. Most gimmicks do require a sense of subtlety. I don't often use gimmicked cards myself, but I have, and I've worked for the worst drunks in the world. Either you know how to manage them or you don't. I'm just sayin'. I can't write off an entire branch of card magic that way. If they're not for you, that's fine; just don't tell the rest of us that it's not possible. |

More a waste of time not to learn how to make some gaffs.
Charlie Kalish showed me a blank card he made using mounting tissue (and something else) that looked perfect even though it was forty years old. Please have a look at Don England's videos for some examples of how gaffs can be used sensibly and keep in mind that Hofzinser was not afraid to use gaffs.

I agree, there is something inherently satisfying in allowing spectators to inspect cards if they demand it. There's also something inherently satisfying in achieving such a level of conviction with them that they don't feel a need to. Any problem can be approached from an infinite number of directions.
If using a gimmick is like using a stooge, then so is a double turnover. |

What are you doing that would encourage audiences to demand to inspect the cards? Usually that notion is diffused early on by handing them a pack and asking them to remove certain cards for a trick like oil and water.
