I think we are being highly insularly punked.

Even further on the subject of Skinner's 3CM, the package used to include a little wallet with duplicate cards. However, I never had to bring the wallet out again in many different performances. I was never asked; and like Sean's post above, I did this for teenagers, IMHO the most critical of lay audiences! But really, the effect and the performance are all what its about. I learned it first from the booklet that came with the trick; however, ya just gotta check out Bill Malone's handling and patter. It's more about misdirection than 'protecting' the pip.
This has been a most interesting topic overall, disagreements and all. Thank you, Magic Café. |

There are so many ways to switch out packets of cards - wallets, Platt Pad, holdouts, full deck switches - there's no reason to think that gaffs are a "waste of time" if they allow you to do an effect that you couldn't do otherwise.

Yes, but for those 2 that feel that gaffs are a waste of time shows (in my opinion) a lack of experience, a lack of creativity and maybe a lack of perseverance- in my opinion.

Obviously it's your opinion; what else would it be?

I think that title of the original post has fueled the fire to incite rather than rouse. I believe that the original poster was genuine, though. I have been reading terms like "lack of creativity", "experience", "wannabe" etc. as though there is some line in the sand for some in this matter. OK, I'll go ahead and admit that I probably fit in with the Wannabes and I need more experience, be more creative, and channel Dai Vernon. It's not really about my ego anyway. I like to make my audience happy with the presentation while not letting them see my methods anyway.
To avoid any confusion...

To respond to Kaspar's original question. I don't think that replacing gaffs is going to be a problem. Gaffs worth having are going to be more easy to obtain than ever before. A custom-made gaffed cards are within the reach of anyone. I purchased two custom made gaffs on Bicycle stock that were beautifully made (by Cardshark)and shipped to me from Germany to the US for $15 including shipping.
Caruk, Someone mentioned Tommy Wonder's use of gaffed cards in the Books of Wonder. I would recommend watching Wonder perform his Tamed Cards routine. One would be hard pressed to find a more gaffed routine. He asks someone to pull freely pick a card from a force deck with short cards. Then blatantly pulls out a packet of cards that are gaffed as hell. It is one of the most magical and amazing routines that you could ask for. I would bet that he was never asked by a spectator to see the cards at the end of the routine - or the gaffed deck. If you would take the time to study how such routines are constructed you would not be making such sweeping statements about gaffed cards. One of my best workers has Bannon's Twisted Sisters. One of my favorite effects of all time. Magician always say, use Duplicity instead - same effect but without gaffs. Great. But why, when no one has ever asked to see the gaffed cards. You see, if the routine is structured and performed well, the spectator thinks that they have seen everything. You eliminate the possibility of the gaff without having to say "look, no gaffed cards here." You can do this with things like false displays and good scripting.

My opinion is that gaffed cards are like anything else we use in magic... it depends on the context and the performer. Best Regards, John

In my opinion, gaffs are (in my opinion) a complete and perfect substitute for deftness, in my opinion. (In my opinion.)

I wonder what Vernon would have done if Houdini tried to grab his cards.
