Montes montes montes.....
To start off, you have your original monte and your gaffed ("special card") montes. The original monte is timeless. If you want to learn it, you will have a POWERFUL effect plus sleights you can use for other tricks. Just don't get caught doing it for gambling or you'll get jail time. I recommend Daryl's monte video if you have interest in that. Gimmicked montes are as many as grains of sand on the beach. Ultimate Three Card Monte, Ultimonte, Color Monte, Stand up Monte, ...uhhh.. I can't remember any more, but there are MANY MANY MANY more. Each have their good sides and badsides. Most gimmicked montes are not examinable when you are done unless you switch out the cards. Check out http://www.penguinmagic.com for demos of each. I personally would go with Mike Skinner's Ultimate Three Card Monte or Color Monte, both are powerful. FYI: Color monte is examinable and the sleights aren't hard! As you will learn in your studies of magic, the gimmick or effect means NOTHING unless you have a story to go along with it. The only exception is themed stage work and manipulations... the audience knows what to expect when going to a McBride or Copperfield show. I hope this helps, let me know if you need anything more. I'm off to answer your other posts! - Alex

I would recommend Daryl's Monte video, because it shows you many different versions of 3 Card Monte. You can pick one that you like and learn it.
As for gaffs, as Alex said Mike Skinner's Ultimate Three Card Monte is as close to real magic as it gets but you have to do a switch. Great effect! Color Monte is another good effect, and there is no switch. You will be performing both in a short amount of time, as compared to the real 3 Card Monte.

I learnt how to do the classic Monte sleights by reading Erdnase's Expert at the Card Table. That is a good starting point. However, it doesn't delve into routining it for entertainment.
Another sleight that I use to demonstrate a in the hands Monte effect is the Annemann alignment which I learnt to do from Shaun Steel's videos on www.e-magictrick/emagic. Of course, you could always do gaffed versions, if you so wish. Good luck! |

Alex, That was a very nice and complete post.
I have Color Monte and Ultimate Monte. And I just purchased Daryls Full Monte DVD. I started using John Scarnes book few months ago which is short, but packed with punch (and very inexpensive). Daryl refers to Scarne constantly in his DVD. The Monte is a classic effect and you can't do wrong giving it a bit of study time. Good luck, Mike
Magic is fun!!!
