It's been about 2 1/2 weeks now and I'm beginning to give up. I'm sitting with about 15 different 20th Century Silk sets that I have somehow collected over the years. Each time I've bought one I was enamored over the vibrant color or design of the middle silk or the silk to be vanished and promised myself that this time I would add this trick to my show.
The problem is I am having a tough time developing a novel or even half way interesting presentation for the effect. The basic effect of having someone come up and hold the silks in a glass while I vanish the one silk and have it appear between the two in the glass is just not cutting it. Does anyone have any presentational tips or bits of business that they are willing to share. Once I develop a satisfactory presentation for this trick I will be willing to share it with anyone interested. Brad |

Take a look at Wiz Kid Eleazar's (currently rocking as Wiz Kid Ee-Gee-Fiki) "Every Century Silks" from The Wizards' Journal #8 (on my site). Just read the ad and see if you like the concept. If not, nothing lost but a little time checking it out.

Brad,
I combine 20th Century Silks with Silk to Egg. Start by tying silk together and putting them into the glass. Perform Silk to Egg. Crank the real egg in to a matching glass. Now the missing silk is found in the 20th Century Silk. Done! The silk is easily vanished and reappears. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- I use 20th Century Silks with a center silk that says "Happy Birthday", "Thank you", "The End" or is a rainbow diagonal printed silk. |

Hi Spellbinder and Bob,
Spellbinder, I did a quick read of your ad for the 20th Century Silks. What a creative presentation you have. Besides making it fun you really give the effect meaning. I will definitely look into it further. Thanks for responding. Bob, after reading your presentation I immediately had one of those why didn't I think of that moments. Makes so much sense to use the effects in combination. I already use your silk to Egg and love it. I really appreciate your input. If anyone else has any ideas please feel free to share. Brad |

Brad,
Although someone else mentioned this on another thread, Hocus-pocus Magic is selling Mark Wilson's routine for the 20th Century Silk effect. When I was a child, this was the first silk trick I learned. While I no longer perform this trick, I still like it because it reminds me of my youth. I always used a young boy to help me and I put the two tied silks either in his pocket, if he had one, or just had the child hold them between his two hands. And you know, I never had a problem doing it this way. I'm guessing this routine is old hat stuff, but when I was young I always told the story of a bank robber (multi-colored silk) and two policemen (2 blue silks). Enjoy, Gerry |

Gerry,
Thank you for sharing your idea and routine about the policemen cathcing a criminal. You can also use the same theme involving a King, a spy, a wizard. Michael

Throw in some comedy by becoming silly.
Tell the kids you cannot keep the yellow one from being in between both blue ones. Untie the yellow one and put it in a bag, box, ect. Tie the two blue ones together. Show the yellow one disappeared. Act as if you do not know where it went. Look several places as if you can not find it. Tell the kids you are happy it did not join between the two blue ones, show both blue ones still tied together. As you are walking away pull the two blue so the yellow appears between them. Act like you do not notice it. The kids will be pointing and saying where it is. Act confused like you do not know what they are talking about. Finally you will notice where it is. Make a funny facial expression as if you are upset you cannot keep the silks apart. It will make a good plus by adding a lot of children reactions (yelling, pointing, and laughing). |

Hansel, Gerry, and Dynamike you guys have been a major help in my 20th Century Silks progress. First I had no ideas, now my head is swimming with possibilities. Thanks a bunch.

While I often do it as a comedy effect with a lot of audience participation (wilting flower, breakway wand and fan, Bongo hat, Weller Sausages, Balloon hat, etc.), It can be a very powerful routine if done with a light background music as a motivational piece. It is one of those great utility effects that is easily adaptable to any situation or audience with different patter and music.

Hello Brad:
Arnold Furst had a melodrama theme with 20th Century Silks. Each hank represented a character...hero, heroine, and villan. The audience would cheer or boo when the hanks were held up during the telling of the story. The routine is in "Magic for Monsters" or Kid Stuff 6. Ron |

Hey Gerry I know what you mean about Mark Wilson's impact. Although many of his performances stand out in my memory,I'll never forget the first time as a child I saw him do the color changing knives and silk to egg. Boy, that was real magic.
Richard do you use one, two or more kids in your routine? It sounds like fun. Brad Posted: Apr 25, 2011 9:02pm Ron, I have both books, but they happen to be in storage. Now I have a reason to dig through those old boxes. I love the idea of the audience involvement with the cheering and booing. Thanks a lot. Brad |

I use two kids. Usually a boy and a girl.
I once did a version where I shot the vanishing silk in the change bag with a pistol. It reappeared full of holes. Another really good source, is the BOBO MAGIC SHOW. Bobo had a lot of good fun routines. It might be in KID STUFF 5. Richard
