For what it is worth, I use many different effects but if you want a powerful message that also incorporates a lot of Volunteers, it is hard to beat Keys to the Kingdom
A great story-telling piece that I use many times to close my church show is Barry Mitchell's Treasure Chest.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

Keys To The Kingdom is such a fantastic closer for me. The first time I presented it on stage using young volunteers from the audience, I had it in the middle of my program. I presented it describing all the lies the devil wants you to believe so that you'll never believe the real truth. When it finally gets to the selected card, (representing Jesus) After I ask the volunteer to show everyone the card she/he selected, I say that she made the right choice, they chose Jesus. I talk about how there is only one way to get to Heaven, and that He is the ONLY way. He is the Light, and He is the Truth. I end it with reciting John 3:16.
The reason why it is now at the end of my program is because of how much you can emphasize on the salvation message by talking about the things that won't get you into Heaven first before explaining who Jesus Christ is. I never do alter calls as most of you already know, but I am open to the church Pastors to do an alter call if they so choose to do. I felt this was appropriate of me to end with because it leads so nicely into an alter call for Pastors who wish to do one after the program. If no alter call is going to take place, it's still a wonderful message to end my program with. Perhaps my next program I may have it recorded. Of all my Gospel magic props, this one has become my favorite.

"Keys To The Kingdom" is one of my favorites when I do a regular length program, but the considerable exposition prohibited it this go round. In fact, the first time I did it I completely forgot to have a spectator "choose" a number...it went over great anyway. Even had compliments at the end. How "magical" is that? Anyway, I had considered it, and revmike was kind enough to replace the descriptions of the cards I found had mysteriously vanished. As a side note, I always love the "giddiness" of the child who receives the "Jesus" card and the "anxiety" of the child who gets the Devil card
Dan, I defer to the pastors as well when it comes to alter calls. I add a "D" on the end of the A-B-C steps of salvation, saying, "DO you want to know more?" In regards to the particular presentation that spurred this topic, I have settled on a modified Barry Mitchell's "King Eno's Treasure Vessel." After careful consideration and prayer I settled on the theme of the need for forgiveness. I picked this up a couple of years ago at the 1st ADVANCE conference in TN, and in Barry's lecture notes he included a wrapup of this effect that was targeted towards an UPWARDS banquet presentation, which is what this is. Barry was very gracious in sending me another copy of the routine (still searching for the ADVANCE info I have packed away.) Children can relate to forgiveness, and unchurched parents may not even know they need it. So there it is. |

MagicBus, I am sure we have handled the same equipment and probably at some of the same churches! I count my time with "Hi-Way Bi-Way" as a great experience and a great organization to guide me as I developed my own form of presenting the Gospel with the art of illusion. John was the patriarch of our Illustrated Arts Family and I feel honored to be in that family.
I look forward to our paths crossing soon. ~C~ |

You can find a lot of good ideas and effects at Barry Mitchell web site.
I would perform one of the following effects: + Use it or Lose it! + Mother of all Diamonds + Cords Of Sin They are great! |

Okay...I have a go back. The question was about thinking for the platform...but I do have an effect I use close -up with great reaction and solid message. The effect is Reconstruction by Jay Sankey. Card is picked (say 2 of Diamonds) and lost in the deck. Magician finds the card...except it is the 3 of Diamonds, not the two...so the magician bend over the corners of the card hiding the twos...and covers the center pip with finger and say, '2 of diamonds'. Then the center pip is removed (it is a sticker) and the ends are folded up to reveal that they are 2s and no longer 3s. I talk about how I missed the mark...which was to find their card. I was close...but technically as wrong as picking any other card." In archery there is a term called sin...which means to miss the mark..." and so on. I draw a cross on the back of the card...then peal off the diamond and put it on the cross...and say Jesus died on the cross for my sin...and because of it my sins are removed from my record...as though I'd never sinned or missed the mark in the first place...when I reveal the card to be the two of diamonds. Great reactions.
You get several stickers that match the Bicycle brand perfectly. Great fun and love the easy of flow of sharing the gospel with it. Attached is a .pdf of the concept for my routine...(that Jay himself approved me sharing when I gave him a copy at his lecture in San Diego last year...nice guy). Nice. I do not not know this effect, but curious as to if it can be adapted to jumbo cards for the stage. Obviously I would have to make the pip stickers, but would the method transfer to this larger version? |

As Glen requested here and others through PM, I wanted to comment on tonight's performance. Very enthusiastic crowd of about 280. Went smoothly with the exception of my Three Card Prince/Decisons routine, where I had a left brain/right brain conflict when I found myself performing from the opposite side of the table to which I am accustomed. Also had to do a "live edit" due to time and left out a "what is magic and what it is not" effect (perhaps a new topic- have you had to do this and do you feel disappointed you had to do so?) Decided on using "King Eno" rather than "Mother of All Diamonds" at the last minute for the core message effect (why we all need forgiveness), square circle opener and balloon to rabbit fun closer. Recent life events have kept me from performing as regularly as before, so I found most of these choices comfortable.
One thing I had not expected was running in to old friends I had not seen in over 30 years, former church members, childhood friends, even a teacher from my High School days. As I told one, when we were teenagers all we could think about was getting away from our hometown. Now as adults, all we want to do is get back! Thank you again for all your sharing of thoughts. I will incorporate many in my next program as I have been invited back. |

The trick I perform at every Gospel magic show is Duane Laflin's "What Color Is Your Bible?". Just love that effect- and although Duane no longer makes it- it is available I believe in one of this later publications on Gospel magic you can make for yourself with the help of a full color copier, etc.. I start the trick out by taking the cards out of a huge decorative KJV wooden Bible cover box (which I bought at a place similar to Hobby Lobby)- then at the end offer some tips on reading the Bible. It is listed on the video index for http://www.ChristianMagician.org (see this topic heading on The Magic Café') if you'd like to view the initial taping of it for the program. Maybe Duane will start making it again someday.

I also love What Color is Your Bible and I like that idea you had of the Bible cover. You are right though, Duane has published this so that people can also make it up on their own.

Agreed John. I also don't like the premise that we can't do anything without God. Many people in this world who do not believe in God accomplish plenty without the aid of God. I do not think that telling people they are useless without God is actually biblical.
It gives a false impression of us as God's creation. God didn't create us to be useless. God gave all of us the capabilities of choosing good or choosing evil. He gave us the needs to be successful regardless if we believe in Him or not. Just take a look around the world and notice all the successful people in it who do not believe in God, or believe in a different God altogether. I also think that telling people they are useless without God is counter productive for true discipleship. However, I do believe Wes is referring to getting rid of our sin nature. Only through God can we be forgiven. And, that forgiveness has nothing to do with be worthy or good enough. It's offered freely to anyone who not only believes in the name of Christ, but he who confessses to worship Him. God will forgive us of our sins, but it's up to us to stop sinning. God will give us strength to overcome temptation, but we still weill be tempted.

Since the quality of normal playing cards compared to their jumbo counterparts isn't equal, the sticker might be a chore to take off. However, if one were to make a metal card and the suit could be a large magnet. I don't think effect wise it would be as "magical," but it could still be a very strong message.

Dan, yes, I see Wes's point, and while it's theologically sound, it's just bad performance etiquette. I was being snarky. There's a surprise. JW

A simple, but effective way of giving a gospel message is with the "stiff rope." Duane Laflin has a routine talking about the different ways man tries to get to God (holding rope up to represent each way; it always falls down) - these have always failed. Jesus came to provide a way for man to be reconciled to God (holding rope up, it stays up this time).....I always get a great response to this effect.
