I was inspired by the discussion to find a Walgreens and buy a couple of decks of Studs. The cards feel thinner than Bicycles, certainly thinner than Fournier 505s, but they have a three-dimensional linen finish, and slide very easily over each other. They seem to faro right out of the box better than either other type. Can't comment on how durable they would be, but they are certainly inexpensive. It's interesting that Walgreens has commissioned USPCC to manufacture of this deck to be distributed exclusively in their stores. Instead of gambling rules, the advertising cards feature Walgreens services. The back design also seems to offer opportunities for inconspicuous marking.

You guys are amazing. I didn't think there would be so many responses by people who actually know enough about them. Thank you turk for letting me know about the let's make a deal thing, I spent a good half hour trying to figure out how to get in there, good to know now. So far the best price I got by calling around was 200. Some guy even offered me them for 500, at which point I nearly had a stroke trying to respond in a civilized manner. This all brought me into questioning the entire way we value things. Who says paying 200 on a deck of cards is crazy but paying 10 grand for a ring, or baseball cards, or stamps isn't as crazy. Made me question and think about for a long time the way we tend to value things that have no direct use or clear value. Anyways, I think I'll get him one of the decks mentioned above, so far his fav deck is the messer? one (gold and black). I think I'll try lee asher later if the price is right later on. I have a strong reputation of being a cheap guy, and I will work hard to defend it. thanks a lot guys it was great to hear from all of you. be well.

Jerry's Nugget cards are an overpriced fad.
Those who buy them obviously declare them "unique" and "brilliant".....I suspect in large part because they've just paid $150.00 a deck for them. Those that have used them prior to their popularity and when they were a few bucks each (as I have) will tell you that "yes, they're a deck of cards". |

Were they also overpriced at $50/deck?

I have a brand new NDO deck of JN cards. It just doesn't have the celo wrap and more, or much of it.
Never used. PM me if you don't mind an unsealed deck.

They are "worth" what people will pay for them. when they were $50/deck, it turns out they were an extraordinary investment, because now people will pay four times that. the were not in fact over-priced. you could have bought them for $50, then sold them for $150. is it completely lost on you that the price people are willing to pay for them could continue to increase?
it's not "some would say yes, some would say no." of course they don't have inherent value that's more than a few cents. that's neither an interesting point nor at all relevant when people are willing to pay $200/deck - except to suggest that, if people lose the willingness to pay a lot for them, the price could drop to nearly zero. that's true of virtually everything, though. what is gold "worth"? the inane trope that's so popular here that it's just a matter of "opinion" is only half right. while it is true that market prices are at some level driven by people's opinion of what is being bought and sold, your opinion that "They were worth the .50-$1.00 as deck when Jerry's Nugget had them still and sold them" is as irrelevant as the opinion that a particular piece of art is not in fact "worth" the $23 million that someone just paid for it. |

Just a reminder guys, Lee Asher is putting his 2011 stock up for sale tonight at 9pm EST. Be the first to get a chance to pay $100 for an open deck, or between $160-$350 for one sealed deck in a random colour (red or blue only, obv). Now with an automagically changing price even after adding a deck to the cart. Add it for $160 if you're one of the lucky 3, check-out and pay for who knows how much. Awesome. Lee must be giddy over the mad amounts of money he'll make on these.
Personally, I'll go ahead and pay the price I would for one open deck (only for the first lucky 3!), but instead I'll end up with 2 bricks of platinum bees. I think I'll enjoy those a bit more. Thankfully I'm not buying them as an investment, but instead to, you know, actually use them up. |

For some these decks are pieces of history. Others view them as an investment. Still others consider them works of art. There are even people who consider them all three.
Why spend $3000-$4000 on an original Erdnase, when you can get a facismile, with better quality paper, for a fraction of the cost? Or 1000 Dover editions for the same cost? Because you want it. You want an authentic 'piece'- piece of history or piece of art. Sure you could get the cheap reproduction, and really, if it remains sealed, who would know? You would. It's the difference between an original print or a poster. For some the difference isn't worth the added cost. Cool. So don't buy it. But for those that do value the product, I'm sure they'll be ecstatic when they get theirs from Lee. Ben

Though I joke about the certificate of authenticity, I agree with Ben.
Quick Nugget story. Several years go I purchased a copy of J.K. Hartman's Card Craft from a seller on another magic forum. I don't remember what I paid for the book back then, this is probably ten years ago. I am sure even then it was in excess of two hundred dollars. When I received the package, enclosed with the book was a note from the seller. He felt bad that I had paid such a premium on the book. So, he sweetened the deal by including three sealed decks of Jerry's Nugget cards, two red and one blue. They remain sealed today. With the economy and the magic market for books being what it is today, I could probably sell one deck of the cards for far more than what the book would bring. I hope the seller didn't kick himself too much. Brian

Anyone know why the tier pricing increases? Im not sure the top tiers would provide return on investment - they seem to go for less than £200 on ebay...
