A facebook friend of mine just posted this. It's from Acushnet Park in the south end of New Bedford, MA, next door to my hometown.
My guess is it's two guys in a suit. Was this a common act? http://www.flickr.com/photos/spinnerpub/......2656288/

There have been a couple of rope-walking elephants.
You're right. This picture is two people. Look at the articulation of the legs.

Also, rope-walking elephants don't do heights.

How did our modern world get so "improved" that we lost lovely excursion parks like this one? How is what we have now better? I'm getting old.

And they always used to be at the end of a trolley line.

Acushnet Park in New Bedford was built by the Union St. Railway, which also built Lincoln Park just outside New Bedford, MA. The trolley lines created these places as a destination for their riders in the evening and on weekends. Acushnet park was pretty much destroyed by Hurricane Carol in 1954. Lincoln Park survided through my high school and college years and closed in the late 1980s, I think.
The trolley company also operated a clambake pavilion, dance hall and bathing beach in my town, which were also closed after the destruction of Hurricane Carol. So many people in southeastern Massachusetts, particularly those aged 40 and older, miss these places so very much.
