It's shaping up to be interesting. The Conservatives, led by the bland but strong-fisted Stephen Harper are cruising toward their third mandate. In all likelihood it will a third minority government. The people, it seems, are saying "you're the best choice available, but we don't trust you enough to grant a majority."
The Liberals, long the powerhouse of Canadian politics are in decline. Led by Michael Ignatieff, the Liberals have been relentlessly attacked by the conservatives, mainly because Ignatieff has lived outside the country for 20-odd years. Sure he was a professor at Cambridge, Oxford and Harvard at that time. And sure he wrote 19 books and advised governments. Canadians do not appear to take kindly to ex-pats aspiring to the Prime Minister's seat. Jack Layton leads the New Democratic Party--kind of a Labour Lite Party--have long been #3 force in the country. Suddenly--and inexplicably--they have exploded in popularity and are threatening to form the official opposition. Their absolute numbers are close to the Conservatives, but they are unlikely to get the seats required to form the government. Layton is a likeable and charming guy in both English and French and presents the biggest twist to our scene in a long time. Gilles Duceppe leads the Bloc Quebecois--a Quebec-only party. They have ties to the separatist movement and are a left-of-centre Quebec issues only party. They have been the spoiler in a number of elections, but the NDP just may make them into bit players. I'm looking forward to Monday. John

Magnus,
What's up with Michael Ignatieff's citizenship? Is he a dual Canadian-U.S. citizen? If note, did he vote illegally in U.S. elections? Woland |

Much is being made of this now in conservative circles: http://www.torontosun.com/news/decision2......426.html http://biggovernment.com/capitolconfiden......ections/ However, it could be that (i) he had expected to be an American citizen by November but for one reason or another did not complete the process or (ii) he simply misspoke or was speaking rhetorically and when he said "vote" he meant "support" or that he "would vote for" if he were actually entitled to vote.

Well, it isn't really a question of birth, but whether dual-citizenship might impair his eligibility. Canada allows dual-citizenship. In contrast, Indonesia, in the 1960s, did not.

Well ... Looks like a couple of election outcomes tonight that no reasonable person would have seriously predicted a month ago.

Looks like Mr. Ignatieff was not the strongest standard bearer for his party. But it looks like Magnus was right, there is no majority mandate.

We have a parliamentary system.
The party with the most seats typically forms the government. If it wins a majority of seats outright, it wins a majority government and has an easier time pushing its own agenda. If it wins a minority of seats, it has to moderate its agenda in order to win support from members in the other parties. Tonight looks like a majority conservative government. Mind you, it obtained this with only about 40% of votes cast (because the "left" split its votes over 2 or 3 other parties). But, that really does not enter into it. A win is a win.

It did turn out to be interesting. The New Democrats are the official opposition with their best showing ever. Two things happened: the Liberals were absolutely crushed and Quebec abandoned the Bloc for the NDP. Harper's Conservatives basically rolled the rest of the country.

I like Magnus' description of the New democratic party as labour light party. Wish I had thought of that.
At various points in my life I have voted for each of the big three parties, usually because I was dissatisfied with the party in power. I regard my vote as a form of dismissal of poorly performing employees. As it happens my party wins this time around. The labour light party make the official opposition for the first time in its history, and the Liberals regroup and most likely make Ignatieff walk the plank. A large number of my friends are Liberals and I am hoping they aren't too bummed out by the results. They are now where I was when Kim Campbell's conservatives were obliterated and Chretien and the Liberals owned the house. Its a long walk back guys, think about the whys and maybe understand the reasons the voters have. |

Thorndyke, I agree that this is exactly what the Liberals need. It's time to clean house, join the century and get back into the game.
My problem is that I don't trust the Prime Minister. Hopefully he'll be pulled into moderation. John
