I had a bday show last wednesday. At the point when I asked the five year old bday girl to come up front with me, she was really sad looking. I asked if she could help me with making some magic happen, and she looked up at me with a really concerned look and said "I don't want to be disappeared." Then on Saturday, during my Peanut Butter and Jelly routine I confessed that "I just can't get this trick to work. I've tried again and again and it just won't work for me." Then one eight year old boy shouts out, "Try it again, but this time you've gotta really believe in yourself!"
Comments like that help make it all worth the effort. |

I was doing a show for the youth and adults at a church. I had a quiz going, it was gaffed to give the kids easy bible questions and the adults very had ones. I had a young girl about 6 years old and asked the question as if it was the Jeopardy show "Was swallowed by a whale" she paused for a few moments her finger pressed to her lips. She answered "Pinocchio".

Michael, the reason the girl was scared is because an adult told her that the magician was going to make her disappear. You know, that uncle that likes to pick on you. It's either "cut in half" or "disappear". I actually mention that in my suggestion lists to parents to not tell the kids that.
My favorite kid comment of late was when a kid asked for a brown butterfly (balloon animal). Without missing a beat, another kid said, "That's a moth!" |

I performed a bottle through body using a young boy, 7-8. After I performed the effect there was a young kid that yelled out "he has a whole in his stomach." Audience went wild with laughter and applause. What a great response I got that night. Made my day!

I had a cub scout, maybe 7 or 8, come up to me after a show recently. I had performed the Smokey Mountain Pizza Box trick, and the kid told me in all seriousness "You know, that pizza was rolling back and forth!" He seemed genuinely concerned that I was not aware of what was happening.

My favorite line came from a child. I asked him how old he was (it was a performance for a family event and not a birthday party). He said, "I'm 4 and 3/4 years old." I asked him when he was going to turn 5 and he thought for a few seconds and then said "on my birthday." That got a great reaction from the audience.
I just wish I could figure out how to get a child to answer that way every time! |

I did Hospitality at a Cub Scout B&G once, and I got to the end where you tear open the milk carton looking for the "secret compartment." After proving that there wasn't one, I said, "that means, it must be..." [pausing before saying "magic!"] A young Scout shouts out "Water!"
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

This morning after a daycare show, a little boy about three years old, came up to me and said, "I love the magic show. It's handsome and pretty."
I just smiled all day over that comment. |

At a recent family day show for a major internet search engine client where the staff is immensely laid back, I had a classic moment. A very cute 4 year old girl in the front row watched as I did a trick I don't even recall now, why don't I recall which one? At the event horizon of the trick, without skipping a beat, she looked quizzically and blurted "what the #ell?"
The adults in the audience broke into laughter... encouraged, she said it again, then again, the last time with a big smile on her face. In an unexpected outcome, the father then shouted "it's her mother."

That's my favourite one so far, Chad!
I would've said "My granny taught me all the best words" I like how the girl adhered to the comedy rule of 3 too. Very astute for a 4 year old. I had a child come up to me recently at a community event and hand me an easter egg saying "This is for you, Magic George" I was touched by this gesture and replied "That is very kind and what a generous fellow you are giving me one of you eggs but I think you should keep it" to which he replied "There's flipping loads of them round the back, just take it" and marched off. |

I was doing a program for case managers at a hospital.
The day happened to be "take you daughter to work day". After my program a young lady came up to me with her hands behind her back. She smiled and said "I think you need this". She brought out a red sponge clown nose. I had not put on the "nose" in 20 or so years. Among all the positive comments on the presentation, it was my favorite.

I recently got a young girl to help me with a trick and when I asked her age, she told me that she was 3 and 6 quarters, when I commented that that makes her 4 and a half she was very adamant that no, she was 3 and 6 quarters. I still haven't worked it out but I'm still smiling at it.
