For making foldable or collapsable illusion like the zig-zag do you necessary have to use continuos hinges or will any type of cabinet hinge work?

What exactly are the advantages types of hinges.

Thanks

You have a lot to learn ...

The piano hing is best used in applications where the prop can be folded into itself. It will make for a much stronger prop. Pin hinges can be used in areas where the prop can come apart.

You might want to purchase one of Paul Osborne's Illusion Systems Books as they have some great practical advice for those just getting started in building. I've been playing in the shop since I was a kid ... nothing better than building your own props!

Thanks everyone, I'll definitely need to pick up that book. The bad thing about piano hinges is most stores in the area only carry 48", 30" or 12" so I'd have to cut them and then wouldn't the pin fall out?

I don't think you're ready to build a Zig Zag just yet ...

Start with something simple .. trust me. The Zig Zag Lady is a very complicated illusion and you'll only get discouraged.

I agree. I am just getting started building. I am starting with Andrew Mayne's Specter Cabinet, then the Dollhouse Illusion. I will move on from there.
