I am looking to get into table hopping at restaurants and bars. You buskers seem like a logical place to ask this question, because I believe you are the experts at it:
Since you live on "passing the hat", what are some good "tip lines" that might work in a restaurant setting that would draw out the cash, but not tick off the servers and management?

Tell them that if they give you money you will stop showing them magic tricks.

Boy, these folk sure are helpful, aren't they?
/In/ a bar or restaurant, I'd probably settle for someone buying me food or drink, rather than actual money. Maybe my standards are low... |

Free food and booze is ALWAYS welcome. Unfortunately, I also have to pay the bills. Somehow I doubt Consumer's Power would look kindly on a shot of Bourbon in an envelope......

I work restaurants all the time. Right now it is hard to get a paying gig, but until last year I had 6 restaurants a week I performed at. I ALWAYS charge the restaurant a fee plus get tips. The only freebie you give is ONE audition night. Now get out there and sell!!

I never needed tip lines when table hopping. I had a tip button and that did it all for me.
"I Love Tips" It so simple it works. |

OR...actually get some material that will help you in restaurants.
Some good places to start would be Dan Fleishman (sp?), Dan Tong, and anything by Paul Green. They all cover the tip in restaurants. Good tip Rotten! Edaurdo, you have to understand that Mike is asking about Restaurant work and NOT street work... |

+1 on Live at the Jailhouse. Now there's some useable material. I love the sugar packet routine and the jigger routine.
I don't think I've ever said, "that trick is worth the price of the DVD" in a post before...but either of those effects would warrant such a statement in this case. |

Mike, you do realize that there is a restaurant/bar workers forum, just above the buskers forum, that deals with table-hopping don't you?
So far I think Rotten has had the best response. |

But there is a post over there that talks about different methods. What has worked for me is doing effects with borrowed money. In my case, they generally tell me to keep it. A lot of times they will just give it to you especially if you really entertained them. Hope that helps.

Since many of you liked my idea I'll tell you what mine looks like. I think you can get them made at the office stores and flea markets.
It's that plastic that if they engrave the front it cuts through and shows white. So you can have them custom made. Mine is blue with white letters. Imagine it being in a up and down rectangle with a safety pin hot glued on the back. It's not that big but just big enough to read. I LOVE TIPS :) Except my smiley face is right side up with a circle around it. (EDIT: I didn't think about imitcons (sp?) I expected an e-mail smile) If I had one made today and not 18 years ago I might have it with a sideways smiley face just for kicks. One time I was really having to hump it so I was doing balloons. That's what the joint wanted. I hot glued some balloons underneath the bottom back side of the button. It reinforced that I get money for balloons. Maybe you can glue a card to the top back side? Just brainstorming now..... |

It doesn't have to be high, but if you don't charge a fee, the restaurant owner will think of you as expendable and worthless. People think that they get what they pay for. 2) Busking "hat" lines are not the same as restaurant "tip" lines. In a restaurant, the same material that buskers use on the street would usually seem excessive and aggressive. 3) If you pound the patrons for tips, the waitstaff will expect their cut. Typically, in restaurants in my area, tips go into a community "pot" and are split up at the end of the evening or the end of the shift. This really sucks for the outstanding waitstaff. 4) Sometimes the best way to get a tip is to end with a trick with a borrowed bill. If you do it right, the patron will let you keep the bill. @ Eduardo -- if you think busking is begging, you need to rethink what you are doing. It isn't. Busking is getting paid a fair price for an act. You get paid after the fact, not before, so you have to prove yourself each time. Begging is expecting pay for doing nothing except asking.

Don't worry. It's not necessary. In fact, it is gratuitous.
