Just had some In 'n Out (sp?) Burgers open up in the area. People were camping out the night before to be first in line.
They did a story in the paper about it - they talked with one young lady who was brought to tears (they had a photo, too!) after taking a bite or 2. I know some people who RAVE over these burgers. Never had one, myself. Are they really, REALLY that good?

Bearing in mind that it's been about 11 years since my burger-eating days...I'd say good, but over-rated. They're on the short list, but they're not standout ahead of, say, Tommy's, Fatburger, or even Wendy's.

I have to admit, I think it's kinda funny that the first response comes from the board's resident vegan.

Not ahead of even WENDY'S????
Oooo, that's not good! Ok, I like a Wendy's double once in a great while...

I like 'em.
Especially because of the way the company treats its employees: quite well. |

When the Cannons had the escape convention in California we would all make trips down the street to In 'n Out. The local equivalent is Salsbury House nips. I loved In 'n Out and wish there was one near me.

Good. But compared to a real Texas burger? Not even in the ballpark. If an "In n Out" is opening in Texas, then clearly too many yankees have moved to God's own country.

Was recently in the Bay Area for my son's wedding and we ate there one night. It was a darn good burger, pleasant staff. Wish they would expand to the east coast.

Well my chef makes the best burger in the city here and I think they are easy to make from sort of watching him make them but I have not tried to make them yet myself. But I guess the experts on burgers and hot dot dogs are the USA. The ones we get over here in the chain Burger places are crap.

Weeping is totally understandable. It is not about how good the burger may or may not be...there is no empirical way to measure “good.”
Rather, it is about the way taste and aroma impact on areas of the brain that house our primal memories. Read the Madeleine cookie section of Proust’s “Remembrance of Things Past” (AKA “In Search of Lost Time”): http://www.fisheaters.com/proust.html

Chessmann, don't trust the vegan, his perception may be skewed.
In'n'Out uses only fresh ingredients and puts no additives in their food. The menu is plain*- burger or cheeseburger, with or without onions, fries, and soda or milkshake- no baconator, bbq sauce, or anything fancy, but you're getting a burger patty that's never been frozen and isn't bulked up with soy protein or preservatives. If all you're used to is McDonalds, Burger King, or another huge chain, then it could well be a tear-inducing experience. You can cook just as good (or better) burgers at home, certainly, but it's a novel experience to get something like that from fast food. Oh yeah- their fries are fresh cut, and don't reheat well in a microwave (unlike the ones made from extruded paste you get at other places) so don't order a large expecting to save some for later without a bit of extra effort. ----- * There is a whole "secret menu" thing (google it), but it's all variations on the same theme.

We have a local place called D'Lish that copied everything from In N' Out. The menu, the way they pick the ingredients, everything but the name. They use locally farmed potatoes for their fries. Best fries ever.

It's been over 20 years for me (Gainesville, Fl) , but they offered a tall bag of fries for 99 cents back then too.

I ate at one once. Nothing to write home about. Certainly wouldn't go out of my way to eat at one. Pretty standard mass produced burger. I would go for a local Mom and Pop type burger joint over this place any day. Plus they put Bible verse notations on all their food wrappers and cups which is annoying enough to me to put them on the bottom of my list of companies I will do business with.

Maybe they just do that at specific locations. I can't remember any biblical quotations when I went there in Vegas.
*edit* Huh, guess you're right. I didn't notice. http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/inandout.asp

I don't remember them doing it 20 years ago, but I probably wouldn't have noticed if they did. I was a starving college student back then and was just happy to be able to afford a burger.
