Aw Snap! Who doesn't like completely impromptu rubber band magic? What if it also involved a freely selected, signed playing card? Dan Hauss presents and effect created by JP Hilario, an amazing magician from the Philippines, that will immediately become a go-to effect for you.
A spectator freely selects a card and signs it. The card is then lost in the deck and a normal rubber band is introduced and inspected (the band could also be borrowed). You wrap the band around the deck twice so that the deck is completely restrained. You then begin to pull part of the deck up when all the sudden, SNAP. Half the cards have escaped the rubber band revealing that the signed selection is the point that the cards escaped. http://www.papercranemagic.com/awsnap.htm |

I'm not to impressed with this effect. If anyone has done rubberband magic before, you can figure this one out pretty quickly. This effect should be on a disc of multiple effects. Not a one trick type of DVD in my opinion.

Aw Snap by JP Hilario
A spectator freely selects a card and signs it. The card is then lost in the deck and a normal rubber band is introduced and inspected (the band could also be borrowed). You wrap the band around the deck twice so that the deck is completely restrained. You then begin to pull part of the deck up when all the sudden, SNAP. Half the cards have escaped the rubber band revealing that the signed selection is the point that the cards escaped. Another DL hits the grounds at Papercrane... "Aw Snap". I'll start off saying it's a satisfactory effect that's fair in handling, and it should be noted all you'll need is a regular deck of cards, some normal rubber bands and a Sharpie marker. You'll have this down in no time, and it shouldn't take you more than 2 minutes to learn the ins-and-outs of Aw Snap. Dan does teach the effect thoroughly in a 12 minute DL but he also mentions a discrepancy that the spectators may notice, but in all honesty, I believe it would be overlooked - also included is a 'Surrounded version' of Aw Snap,if you're performing for more than 3-4 spectators. I do like the idea behind Aw Snap, but I believe it's just "not there yet" - what I mean by that is, I believe Aw Snap benefits when performed in a routine but not as a standalone effect. Also, I'm not too partial on the 'penetration' aspect of the effect but I have worked on different handlings and outcomes and am starting to see the potential of Aw Snap. For now, I'll keep playing around with Aw Snap and see different variations I can think of. But as of right now, I'll put it on my list of "Maybe Effects".

I'm only sad cause I'm wondering if we should have titled this trick "No She Didn't", "Talk to the Hand" or "Don't Go There!"
Seriously, I have seen countless magicians perform crazy man's handcuffs only to go into a card effect with no meaningful transition. When I first saw Aw Snap I saw the potential for many magicians to be able to easily routine some band effects with card effects. It's incredibly easy and fun to do. On a complete side note, one time I figured out how to play Stairway to Heaven on guitar. Even though I figured it out, the song neither lost value nor became less meaningful. A magician being able to figure out a trick does not make it less valuable or mean that you would have created it:) Mandy |

Well said Mandy!
This does look good. I will have to purchase it when I get a chance. However, Papercrane has never disappointed me. The quality of their video's are top notch hollywood style videography, and the material is always workable. Some of the best close-up effects I perform came from Papercrane. In my opinion, Papercrane leads the industry. As far as I'm concerned, Papercrane can always be trusted to produce real working effects that have been tested and performed for real people in real world situations. I really like "No She Didn't" (lol)

Difficult one this because instantly on seeing it as a magician you know how its done.
Took me 30 seconds to get a pack and a band from my desk drawer and replicate it. Think the issue is that, as others have said, its not really all that for a standalone purchase...would have been better within a package of tricks. Gospel Dan, not to get to pedantic but that's a bit OTT to my mind. I think PaperCrane should be applauded for being a supplier of new effects but there are several products they have put out that really weren't that good imho. |

That's what it all comes down to in the end, our opinions. People look to see what the majority opinion is when looking for reviews. I can honestly say that I have never been dissapointed with anything I bought from Papercrane Magic. I have also not bought everything (but pretty darn close)they sell. I had one negative opinion on one effect that Papercrane Magic produced, and that was simply because it did not suit me at all. I didn't see myself walking around, nor playing with other people's sandals.
I stand with what I say. I have shopped numerous sites, including E, T11, and Penquin, and by far have got the best service from Papercrane Magic. Not everything is always going to be a gold nugget, but even some of the coals were worth turning into diamonds. This is provided as a download which costs less than $10. It shows you how to do something that perhaps some are able to figure out. It looks good visually, and yes, I think it would work best as a lead in rather than a stand alone trick. However, what someone does with this effect is entirely up to them to make it their own routine. If this was a dvd for $30 I'd have something negative to say, but as you can see it's a single effect download for $7.00. Worth it to me. :) The videography is top notch, and if there were awards in the magic community for videography, Papercrane in my opinion wins hands down.

Papercrane girl is sad because she is searching for meaning in rubberband tricks. Searching for meaning in magic tricks plus the deep grooves of "Stairway" make Papercrane girl a dull girl.

Well I guess those who can just figure out will not need to buy it---while others will see the value and purchase it. I think if I did rubber band magic I'd buy it.

Yeah and saying the papercrane girl is sad. How do we know that? Im blindfolded but I am not blind. Stairway to Heaven does make me a little sad.....I guess, but the girl who showed it to me many moons ago did not know I was not musically inclined so I never did really pick it up like paper crane girl.
If paper crane girl learned it and can play it well, I think she should be happy not sad therefore deduce the avatar is just a well....avatar. We cannot know she was defintely sad when the digital was taken. I feel better now........ More reviews needed for this please..... Rotting at 0247 hrs am PS: Snap.
