Does anyone know the term for when:

A friend tells you he's thinking of getting a silver car and you are then sensitized to seeing silver cars all around you.

Or the name of an old film star comes up and then you seem to be hearing that name more often than you have in years (not in conjunction with a specific event like death or a new movie).

I know there is a term for this (not coincidence).

If you don't know the term but seem to know what I'm asking about, could you suggest some search terms for google?

Thank you,

The forgetful, -Mary Mowder

One phrase to describe it is "cognitive bias." This phrase is kind of an umbrella term... there are a lot of variations on the theme. What you describe is kind of the reverse of memory bias. That's a situation where you learn a fact -- usually an unexpected fact -- and then you unconsciously distort or fabricate memories to support the fact. Like if today you think your neighbor is a nice person but tomorrow he's arrested for murder, suddenly you might "remember" all kinds of murderous tendencies that may or may not have actually existed.

What you describe is also close to, but not quite exactly, "confirmation bias." That's the phenomenon in which one pays more attention to things that confirm a belief, and ignore things that contradict the belief.

How about making your term? Cognition filter? Close to Cognitive bias, but easier to picture in your head as you describe it: A filter slips over the front of your brain that only lets in the picture/word/idea of what you're looking for. When it lets something thru, your brain notices immediately, otherwise the filter is 'transparent' and unnoticed.

There's nothing like a little BS to allow you to make up the rules and definitions to suit yourself.

Tom, the notion has been called everything from "the volvo effect" to "salience" to priming when you look at the literature of advertising to perception/cognition research. The last thing we need is more jargon. Priming is were you introduce a stimulus and chain it (behaviorist language) to some significant thing/feeling. The person who's been primed is not all the more aware of those items when they are in the environment. Could be anything from four leafed clovers on the ground (after you are taught that finding them brings good luck) to the kind of car your ex-best-friend drives after a heated argument where you ...

anyway - please no excess jargon. If you think of a simple expression that encapsulates the idea in a way that helps communicate the thing to all and sundry - that would help - and such labels can be helpful to memes.
