I'm wondering the relative merits of the r****r b**d flipper vs. the gravity type and which brand is good quality. Don't think I want to spend custom prices (lassen), but one of the other brands. I would probably get it in a Kennedy half. Would there be any need to have both types of coin? Trickes better served by one or the other?

Roy Kueppers makes some very nice flippers out of any coin you want. He can make sleight variations that you want without changing the original price drastically. That is my brand recommendation.
Having a b**d in a flipper is the standard M.O. for those coins. It operates more smoothly and holds it together securely when you want it to be closed. There are some out there with ma***ts in them that require another special piece to open them. The standard is the way to go. If you have more questions or need more help, PM me and I will be glad to help you further! |

Mr. Risk,
Agree whole-heartily, but keep in mind that people like what they are used to. I love the first one you mention. A bit of advice when using them is to inspect the whatjamacallit every once in awhile and have a few extra on hand. Change it out if you see even the slightest hint of of nick. Even with this bit of maintenance they are outstanding. good luck, Phil |

Get it to match whichever type of coin you use the most. If Kennedy half, then that;s what you want. I prefer gravity flippers except for specific effects like Double Deception. WRT rubber bands or elastic thread, doesn’t make a lot of difference really. You'll be changing either one out at some point! Both Bob Swadling and Joe Mogar make them with ET.

Both Bob Swadling and Joe Mogar make them with ET.< I would like to respectfully disagree with the above statement. Rubber bands are quite inferior to elastic thread when it comes to durability, especially in certain climates. They are also more difficult to remove in general. Finally, the new Swadling flipper is designed to simplify the changing process. It comes with an instructional DVD that shows how to do this. No part of the gaff has to be removed and then reattached. I can't see how this can be a close call. |

I'll double the advice on the elastic thread, rubberbands dissolve if even a micro amount of cyanoacrylate touches the rubber bandband when replacing them, you need to replace it again.
Cyano will not mess with elastic thread, plus e-thread is way stronger...mwo |

I have two flippers that need repair. I haven't purchased any bands yet. Where can I buy the ET? Both are Kennedy halves.

The only problem with ET is that it can be a bear to thread into and tie on to in internal system, and then get the right tension you desire. Rubber bands give you just the right tension, but aren't as long lasting.
Some people prefer peanut butter, others prefer jelly. Both work, and have their plusses and minuses (sp?), just depends on how you want to take care of things.

Well, you pay $50 extra for the ET tyoes, and as I have been changing bands on flippers - including my Schoolcraft - without any problems I see no reason to go with the ET just for the ET. That said I do have Triception set and I believe that has the ET, but that was just incidental - I didn't buy it for the ET.
As far as "cyanoacrylate" - whatever the heck that is! - it hasn’t attacked any of my flippers in the last 20-25 years so I am not particularly worried about that! (Talk about running when not chased!) Jim |

Got it. I use only double-sided tape for my flippers, and instructions by Jamie Schoolcraft.
Thanks! Jim |

Jb flipper by Swadling for sure. You'll be doing more magic and less fixing.

Wow, a year and a half has gone by already on this thread! Would you classify a TUC in with a flipper? It does seem to do many of the same effects.

I think they both have their place and I do own both. a TUC walker and a NGF Flipper from my triception set (also a walker). some effects can be imitated by either but they do both offer some unique and individual qualities. They both stand alone in some aspect or another.

Thanks. How satisfied are you with your triception set? Do you have a "top 3" set? For me, it is currently a hopping halves set, tried and true scotch and soda, and a TUC with a [ and copper/silver/brass.

The "next generation" is the type with elastic thread that they were discussing above.

Do the "next generation flippers" from Swadling/Mason require a magnet to open, or just gravity?
Or perhaps there is more than one style they offer? Thanks, Bill |

They do not require a magnet to open. If the flipper coin as a whole goes into a shimmed shell then you need a magnet to pop the entire flipper coin out of the shimmed shell. The only down side to the Swadling/Mason flipper coin is that the insert is not remilled and does not use the internal band system. It uses the external groove on the insert coin.
