Due to a strict enforcement of Café rules, which has trumped good intent, my recent effort in behalf of Rick Maue has been ended and all reference to it summarily deleted. However Rick will receive $500 from it. Next time I try to do something helpful on the Café I'll just buy an ad and announce it. Perhaps the morals of money will set a charitable act free from the shackles of authoritarianism.
Thank you all and Rick, my continued well wishes and prayers. Gary |

I've been informed that my infraction would not be allowed in a banner ad either.
I give up. In Oliver Twist, Dickens observed that "The law is a add, a idiot . . . ." He doth say it better than I. |

BTW, my bad: Dickens said "The law is a as*, a idiot . . . ." not "a add".
In this case I censored Dickens myself to save the administrators the trouble of blocking out letters. If someone is going to profane one of the world's greatest writers--and no one should--I would rather be the one to do it and hope that his spirit grants me some collegial license (aka, bends the rules). |

But there seems to be another product with a similar intent being allowed...in other words, business as usual.

Is there any explanation for the removal of one product and the apparent double standard?

Sad, but still not unsuccessful. Your effort will not go gentle into that good night. As a Christian, I can say that your intention and your contribution to a very humanitarian cause blessed me down deep, where it counts, and probably others as well. It will not go unnoticed by our Creator or those who recognized it for the kindness it was. Thank you, Gary, for the rare opportunity of actually seeing magicians helping magicians. |

A Rick Maue Story: I heard that Rick was lecturing in OKC. I was booked that day, but thought I could attend the first half before heading out to my show. I really enjoyed the first half and, during the break, shook Rick's hand and thanked him for a wonderful lecture. Rick asked me if I could stay for the first few minutes of the second half. He promised that I wouldn't be disappointed. I looked at my watch and figured, nervously, that I could stay another ten minutes and still get to the show on time. The first effect he performed was "Collect Call." It blew me away. I couldn't stay for the teaching part of the effect, but Rick was super-kind and sold me the lecture notes before continuing with the rest of the lecture. My personalized version of "Collect Call" is now a staple of both my 60- and my 75-minute acts. Thanks a million, Rick.
PS: I did make it to the show on time. |

Michael, thank you so much for your words, which I shared with my minister wife. They are indeed a soothing balm.
John, I have no idea why the double standard. Perhaps it's an oversight, but if we're thinking of the same thing, I hope it continues to its completion date and the money raised in it soars. David, I'm with you. Subversive ideas such as magicians helping magicians should be stopped dead in their tracks before they can take root. Amira, my friend, I expected this thread to be gone already considering its content coupled with my private messages that have gone back and forth between me and the powers that be. My effort was merely a riff on the wonderful work you and others have consistently done to address social and political needs. I stood on the shoulders of giants until I was arbitrarily flick off. One would think the Café might want to encourage such outpouring of compassion instead of snuff it out. But they can't snuff it out: it's too powerful for them to control. All you caring, compassionate people who have rallied over and over to humanitarian efforts here on the Café, you are greater magicians then you could ever have dreamed to be. No mirrors, no strings, no gaffs, no props--but magic in its purest form: miracle. Gary |

Think about the compassion and willingness required to help others. Going the 'extra mile' to set up such an effort and the difference it can help make, large or small, to the beneficiaries.
The effect it has on society, AND the effect it has on YOU. YOU, The person who lends a hand, donates time or money in a genuine selfless desire to help another human being, be they friend or stranger.... creates REAL MAGIC. This magic resonates. This magic soothingly permeates all those it comes in to contact with.... and those people, sometimes, go on to 'Pay it forward', creating a butterfly effect, of which becomes so far spread it becomes intangible. Know that It still exists though. More than ever before, the world needs this magic. I need this magic. You need this magic. And gmeister is correct… It IS too powerful for them, or anyone, to control, and ironically, being that we all spend a large amount of time here working out ways to create the illusion of magic… that when a chance to create real magic appears… It is actually too powerful for some to even recognize, much less understand. Walt Whitman: “The question, O me! so sad, recurring--What good amid these, O me, O life? Answer: That you are here--that life exists, and identity; That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse” And as Robin Williams character in ‘Dead poets society’ asks: “What will your verse be?” Continue to fight the good fight people. |
