There’s a bit of magic philosophy here to be considered.
I find that many magicians don’t know when to stop and as a consequence sometimes become boring. If a magician is hired to perform that’s one thing but when “a friend hands you a deck of card and asks you to do a trick”, UNLESS THE CIRCUMSTANCES CALL FOR IT, it rarely should be more than ONE trick. Back above on this thread I mentioned my Invisible Card. A spectator names any card and that card is invisible and then to my disgust and annoyance in an example of Perverse Magic the card becomes visible in my pocket. I’ve done what I was asked. I did a trick. I amused and entertained. I stop. That’s it. At least for then! |

I like easy trick that entertain such as On-Hand Vibration. Don't have to do any particular set up in advance, starts with pick a card and goes on to an even better presentation. Easiest to do with a spectator's cards. Thanks again to Harry Lorayne for that one.

Okay, for me, when the mardy child schtick doesn't work, what effect I do obviously depends on the condition of the pack as we all know that cards used by non-magicians are obscenely well-loved (Blech). If the pack is in really bad condition I still can fall back on wonderful standards such as the venerable Biddle trick, DDLT, Genini Twins, etc. If the people are very keen on magic and the pack miraculously is actually in great shape then I will perform whatever I have recently learned. I believe that such impromptu performances are a wonderful means to test new material in the most difficult of situations. That being said, I believe if you asked to do something, that usually means do ONE thing. Hit them hard with something then hand the cards back to the host(ess). Believe me if they want more, they will beg you. I have seen magicians however that will launch into a half hour act and violate one of the cardinal rules that states "always leave 'em wanting more." By the time some of these magicians are done, people do not see a magician anymore; they see a boor. Ahimsa, Vlad |

Vlad makes an excellent point regarding condition of the deck. Harry's "Easy Indicator" (mentioned in an earlier post) is my choice for a situation like this. The effect moves along at a good pace and deck condition is not an issue. The effect is described in Harry's book Afterthoughts. Of course many of Harry's effects can be used for a one-effect, impromptu, borrowed deck situation.

This week at work I was handed a deck and asked to do a trick. I have never performed there for these people. I probably haven't done a trick at work in close to 30-years. The two decks available were in lousy shape. I couldn't even weave shuffle them. I just toyed around with the deck trying to think what I could do where the cards wouldn't be a problem. I chose the classic twisting the aces. The performance went fine and the observers were very fooled and impressed. I need to think about this more so that I'm not so flummoxed. I really don't perform much so I'm not very well prepared for situations like this.

Just saw this thread after months...I think this is a good place for me to tell you - if you don't already know - that a friend has uploaded a bunch of my performances from my "Best Ever" DVD 4-volume set onto YouTube. What reminded me to mention it here is the above mention of my One-Eyed Jack Sandwich. That's one of the 30 or so "pieces" at that site. Also HaLo Aces (mentioned in this thread) and more. I'm not particularly thrilled with some of them because - the camera picks up things that the live audience doesn't, and I work specifically to the live audience. Anyway, if you're interested go to http://www.youtube.com/harrylorayneonvideo and check it out. Best - Harry L.

And, as others have pointed out (and you alluded to), it's best to make that trick independent the deck being in good shape or even having all of the cards. I made that mistake once when performing for my brother: I tried an effect that required a faro, and the cards were just too sticky. Lesson learned. |

Thanks Nerdini. I will look that one up. Lately I have practiced sleight-of-hand card magic mostly so I'm not up on some of the old non-sleight tricks I used to do. More practice!
In fact I do Harry's One Eyed Jack Sandwich. I've done it ever since I saw Harry do it in a lecture I was attending. It has been one of my standard tricks. I was worried that the deck was so sticky that an extra card might ride along during the Halo Cut. |

One I found that's works with a old worn out deck and packs a punch is Mr Lorayne's The Sting. On his DVDs

Impromptu OOTW (Lorayne)
or The 'Biddle Trick' or Now You See It (RRTCM) or "Australian Sixes" (if I can get the tiniest moment to set it up) from Lorayne's "Reputation Makers"
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

There is a wonderful routine in David Stone's live at FFFF dvd. It's called Self Worked..
The spectator shuffles the cards and the magician seems to never handled them.. What a great effect..

As far as regular card effects, probably Ambitios card or the Homing card. But I usually like to start off with Think a Card so they know right off the bat that this isn't what their Uncle Joe does.
