Do a trick that is quick an easy. So how about "Quick and Easy" from Harry Lorayne's Personal Collection? This has become one of my favorites. It must not be well known as it has only been mentioned once in these forums-in 2002! Personal Collection is OOP, so maybe I should have just kept this to myself.

If I'm handed a borrowed deck, I ALWAYS start with Daryl's Hot Shot Cut (kills every time) since it's a unique and memorable twist on the classic "pick a card, any card" routine that everyone familiar with, I will normally follow that with Harry Lorayne's HaLo aces, then (since I already have the four aces out) I finish with David Regal's Straightforward Collectors where the 4 aces find three spectators cards without even coming anywhere near the deck - it flat...out...kills!

Some friends hand me a deck of cards and ask me to do a trick. What do I do?
I put the deck on the table and ask if anyone else knows a card trick. I honestly do not know one trick with an ungaffed deck. If I don't have a gaff with me, I cannot even do a packet trick. Usually, someone else knows a card trick. Usually it's pretty good. THEN I get out my coins...my Amazing Jumping Arrow Hotrod, and my Reality Twister. I carry those in my wallet. I like to let someone else do card tricks. That sets the mood, and they are receptive (usually). Doug |

I would do counting on it (published in FASDIU by Paul Cummins) and then go into Dr. Daleys last trick, then halo aces, gemini twins and so on... by the way, FASDIU is a great resource for impromptu killer card magic, look for it

I can do Twisting The Aces and Color Monte. Those can be adapted to ungaffed cards. The Elmsley is probably the most useful count, as I never get busted on that. I don't know what makes The Flushtration count so obvious. Lance Burton used it on Craig Ferguson and it went right past him! I just don't get it. Doug |

"what effect I do obviously depends on the condition of the pack"
What a great point, and something I'd never have thought of. Rather than just one for all times and all decks, perhaps it's better to have three or so, each comporting with a deck in bad, OK, and pristine condition. Also if the offered deck is new, that opens vast possibilities, as a bit of displacement plus 2 faros gets you to Si Stebbins. |

I got a bunch of used casino deck, with nice holes punched in them. I use them at the office, practicing shuffles and what-not during my spare time. A colleague went to me and asked for a trick. Becuase of the hole, I can't really do convoluteed tricks with DLs, reversed card, and because it's gemaco decks not unlike bees, I can't really do reverses either... I opted for "Card Conclave" from Giobbi's Card College. While I look for the cards, I can start a nice entertaining patter, and incidentally explain that I don't want to do a "regular pick a card tricks" (which is true, I rarely start with such tricks). My only difference with the original card conclave is that I put the cards on the deck in my hand, do a slow charlier cut, and then a pass while I put the cards on the table. Then, a bit of magic, and all cards are back on top, in pairs. My colleauge enjoyed the trick.

I note the bottom card shuffle it to the top, force it and drag out a mind reader reveal. Laymen have no idea how wrong that is.

I have two options:
The Trick That Fooled Houdini (Let's say there's no table available) 1) An Ambitious Card Routine that ends with: 2) That triumph routine in Bannon's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" Big fan of the above. I get to talk a bit about Houdini and Vernon and then embellish on the story a bit. I apologize for not remembering the names of the effects in Dear Mr. Fantasy. But the effect is mind blowing, and a treat to perform. I read it every year. It's great for anybody who gets tossed a deck of cards at parties. I do believe Mr. Bannon mentions in the book that much of the work in this book has that situation in mind. Aces (Let's say we've got a table available) 1) That spectator cuts to the aces routine in Bannon's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" 2) Twisting the Aces 3) The Last Trick of Dr. Daley Frankly, the standing routine up above is by far my favorite, but this second set is really a journey toward Dr. Daley's Last Trick, which destroys. Spectator cutting the aces is very cool, gets them immediately involved in the action, and gets me the aces. Twisting the Aces is a marvel and an unusual card trick to the layman. They really don't know about non-pick-a-card tricks and Twisting the Aces establishes one as a real magician who is not just your Uncle Joe who knows a few tricks. Now they are fascinated and ready to be kerploded by Dr. Daley's Last Trick. |
