Hi guys, I am looking for books or articles about human nature and our patter for life.
I am after more knowledge and understanding of the human behavior. Much like a psychologist understanding that each person presents an individual problem, yet the pattern of life and behavior expectancy is pretty much the same. That the life of every individual has much in common with all other individuals. Since there is no other area on the café that deals with topics such as this, I just wanted to try and reach the few people here that will know what I am asking for. I want to become more skilled at ‘tell-tale’ signs so that I might better interpret them. Simply put, I want to read more about this area. Any recommended books from our own or others? Best Ray |

I hold degrees in both Anthropology and Marketing, and it sounds like you might want to take a look at some scholarly texts from those two subject areas, particularly in the sub-fields of Cultural Anthropology and Consumer Behavior.
Sociology texts would also be appropriate sources of information pertaining to human behavioral patterns. The problem with such material is the high price of academic texts. You can do a search on these academic areas at textbooks.com. If you are looking for more info pertaining to modern western cultural behavior patterns, then you might want to take a look at the field of Popular Culture Studies. Bowling Green State University in Ohio boasts a reknown Center for Popular Culture Studies. Just go to bgsu.edu and navigate to their Center's page for some links to their academic contact list. They will most likely be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.

"Passages" by Gail Sheehy is highly recommended. It discusses the various stages of life and offers insight re: common life experiences affecting most of us.

Iam not entirely sure what exactly your after, Psychology is the study of behavior and as a Psychology/forensic university student that is a very broad area!
Books on NLP may give you info on eye access cues , tho not all nlp, can be taken as its read. Books on Body language may interest you or studies into deception and telling signs As innermind kind of mention social psychology has some very interesting info and studies into behavior one of my Favorite experiemtns is the Prison study by Philip Zimbardo, you may well have heard of it or that of Milgrim and his electric shocks or interestingly the idea of conformity Asch. If your a little more specific I maybe able to help pin point Thanks Dean |

I too recommend Passages but there is an updated version, New Passages - also by Gail Sheehy, that is much better. I have often used material from this in readings and sometimes suggest that clients read it if it seems that it might be appropriate.

Though it has nothing to do with what you are asking, I would suggest Blink by Malcom Gladwell. You may even have already read it. But from this perspective it is a really insightful book as it is all about instinct and going on gut feeling. The beautiful thing about a cold reading is that it allows one to take a bold leap of faith. And when this leap of faith is backed by instinct that you learn from your personal experiences then this is that bold step forward to that leap.
Also, a book that I found really helpful is The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine ISBN 9780767920100 and her companion book The Male Brain ISBN 0767927540. Both of these give good insight in to what the sexes think, how they think and why they think as they do. Good stuff in there. And of course there is the classic Telling Lies by Paul Ekman.

It's on the periphery of what you originally requested, but I think its a bullseye for presentational fodder.
One of the most useful books I've read in terms of applicable content for building routine narratives, is INFLUENCE: The Psychology Of Persuasion, by Robert Cialdini. Pure gold! e |

And this fits right into my lecture. I have never heard of this book. Yes, I should also look into this just because I am always looking to improve my programs. Thank you, Ray |

Some more info for you about Gail Sheehy's Passages vs. New Passages. I believe that the word 'new' in the title of the second book does cause some confusion from time-to-time.
I own the original Passages and it primarily covers life stages of folks from the age groups of the twenties thru the fifties. I do not own New Passages, but the information I have gathered online seems to indicate that New Passages is not necessarily a replacement/update for the original Passages, rather it is apparently a supplement/sequel which goes into further details about the later mid-life age stages with more emphasis on the age groups from the forties and fifties and older. In other words, you might not want to simply dismiss the original Passages in favor of only acquiring New Passages. The original Passages (despite being written 35 years ago) is still a very relevant work. Since both books are relatively inexpensive, you might wish to consider eventually getting both. I certainly plan on getting New Passages (written 15 years ago) even though I already own Passages; after all, people are living longer, and more coverage of the older age groups seems to be in order. I hope this helps.

Another vote for Passages by Gail Sheehy.
A Google search will give you a complete list of her books. She covers the life experiences of both men and women. |

I would also recommend "The Invisible Gorilla" (listed by cassius2m above). It is a fantastic book that should be read closely by anyone seriously interested in our art. Most of the videos discussed in the book are available to view online.
Good thoughts, Bob |
