Hey folks, I’m finally free! Yes, I’ve permanently deleted my facebook account!
Why? Because facebook is the face of evil. Did you know that employers and banks now decide your credit rating partly based on the credit rating of your friends on facebook? Of course employers for years have been making decisions based on the content of a prospective applicant’s facebook page. If they don’t like your political, religious or partying views, you’ve lost the job. Because facebook lies and obsfucates its privacy policies. Nothing is private on facebook; what you think is private today, including messages and emails can be public tomorrow. Facebook changes their privacy default settings often with no warning, making public what you once thought was private to a specific group of people. Because facebook opens you up to innumerable unwanted hacks. Everytime you click on a game, application , link, or answer a message or invitation you are vulnerable to a hacker’s virus. Hackers know the vulnerability of facebook and there are many viruses going around spread specifically through facebook. Because facebook gives private info to the government when the govt requests it, without a warrant. Julian Assange, who knows something about spying, says that facebook is the biggest government spy network in existence. We’re making it simple for them to spy on us. SO if you’d like to join me in dumping facebook, here are the steps: 1. Go to your facebook page and click on Accounts. 2. Click on Help Center 3. Enter Delete in the search box 4. Click on “How do I permanently delete my account” 5. Near the bottom of the page there is a link that says “submit request.” Click on that. 6. From there on it should be fairly straight forward. You need to enter your password and enter the funny letter codes that you see. This will delete your account. Of course Facebook still has all your photos and messages on their servers, but at least that’s the end of it. You have 14 days to change your mind.

This is why I simply don't put anything online that I have any desire to keep private.

While I am not in the paraniod crowd, I simply do not like the site. I have no idea if they deceide a credit rating based on it, but I do know that people put WAY too much info on there. I mean some put so much info there that it would have taken 3 months of dumpster diving for a thief to get it! They put on there when they are on vacation and how long they will be gone. Often they put an address so the criminal has plenty of time to get in and out. It is sad.

Everyone has giant misconceptions about Facebook. You can't just type in my name on Facebook and pull up my page..., it doesn't work like that. If you have your stuff set to private, then only approved people can see it.,,so no employers, or thieves.

Yea only real problem with that is some are so eager to have huge numbers of "friends" they accept people they have never met. It gets to "thieves" pretty quickly. Plus the thieves have pretty good tech to circumvent most security.
I have no misconceptions, seriously I don't. But you choose to use it reasonably. You are one of the brighter users. It is what it is.

Kevin, there are many people who, due to FB constantly changing their policies, assume their profile is as secure as you describe, while the truth may be far from it. So, while you may be correctly describing your profile, or you may, yourself, be the one with the misconception.

Why shouldn't a bank "decide your credit rating partly based on the credit rating of your friends on facebook"?? If bankers have found that this is a useful way of predicting credit behavior, aren't they just protecting you as a depositor?

Maybe woland but I really doubt that is happening. Sounds like something some some paranoid Conspiracy freak dreamed up. I would just about bet that is exactly what it is too.

RS, I doubt that the accountants and actuaries who figure out how to use various measures in order to predict credit behavior rely on anything other than tested models. Experience hath shown, that in this country at least, the bankers are falling over each other to loan money to anybody who will take it . . . of course how much to charge for that service is the question, isn't it? Earning a living based on the chances that a stranger will or won't pay you back is undoubtedly often anxiety inducing, and I would bet all sorts of formulae have been tried. Bank failures show that predicting the future is still chancy. But that's why we have horse races, and the stock market. Remember, every time that a stock sale is recorded, it means the buyer thought that the stock available at today's price would be worth more at some point in the future, and the seller didn't . . . .

My thinking on the F.B thing is so many people are just friend collectors and of those on such peoples friends lists. Most don't even know even close to half of the people on their lists. They just have them as a friend to feel like they have more actual friends then they really do. So it really wouldn't do for the banks to base the credit ratings of others from F.B. now would it?

It seems that it wouldn't to you and me, but a number-cruncher at one or another bank probably did a calculation that showed a very small maybe fraction of a percent improvement in predictability if FB friends are examined and analyzed according to a particular algorithm . . . . and a fraction of a percent improvement in performance might be the difference between a bonus . . . and a pink slip.

Aside from this...how would a bank ain access to my Facebook account? (to look at my friends, ect). So they have some secret pay off deal with them?

I joined Facebook. And I fled pretty fast … in fact I still wake up screaming.
I got a very kind welcome from a lot of people, but mostly Facebook made my brain hurt. It was like being surrounded by a mob of tween girls ... "Marcy became Deedee's friend, but I told her Joey really doesn't like her. Then I told Stephanie I'd be her friend but not if she was gonna be friends with Billy ... Wanna play Farmville?" I couldn't take it. I guess I'm just too old. |

The presumption is that if those in your network are responsible cardholders, there is a better chance you will be, too. So, if a bank is on the fence about whether to extend you credit, you may become eligible if those in your network are good credit customers. As Woland states, it would be foolish for a bank not to use that information. Kevin, I think you're very wrong about Wikileaks, but I don't want to derail this thread. I'll start a new thread about the 2010 accomplishments of Wikileaks.

I gotta tell you that there are PLENTY of dumb people on Facebook. They don't have to look too far. No need for a conspiracy.
