I am brand new here but I have been doing just small part tricks for family and friends.
Mostly card magic. I do have cups and balls and sponge balls. But I want to learn all kind's of vanishes, productions from what seems impossible things like the bowling ball from briefcase. I got a briefcase which however is a normal one. I would love to know if someone could tell me how it is done seeing as I read on a forum you didn't need a special briefcase. And spending a few hundred dollars on something that I already own just to get the "know how" Is not something I like much. So do any of you have a "how to make it yourself" vanish boxes, production boxes and things in such nature? Also non card tricks and coin vanishes that require only your hands are not needed. Those I got plenty of. Any advice would be great! I have got a big passion for this and am hoping to become an entertainer in the future. I am planning as well currently on saving money to move to another country (I live in Iceland) So I can not be spending a lot of money on magic tricks so I don't want to buy something that goes into the trash as soon as it arrives (Which has happend to 70% of all item's I have bought so far.) One item lasted for two uses then it was ruined. Another did not even work from the start. And sending most magic items back costs as much as buying it again. Also reccomending some cheap stores would be great as well. I have bumped into quite expensive websites while only found one which I consider "fair" prices. |

Anepo - books are the best way to learn magic at a reasonable cost. Look at the sticky at the top of this section for many good recommendations.

I am not a very good reader as in the I am not good at following written instructions without GOOD pictures and GOOD explinations. Also that is such a huge thread it scares me and I am quite sure I will be spending hours just reading the thread and then days finding the books online. |

Anepo: I've written quite a few books JUST FOR YO you won't find them on line. You can find which of my items are currently available at my fairly new magic website. It's listed under this post - the one with the word "magic" in it. Good Luck. HL.

Which is why I don't use ebay and rarely amazon.com to find books on magic. And anything to buy overall. I can only hope to become as good as most of the people here which I am quite sure are all better than me in magic. But with experience I hope to be able to stun people with illusions and magic tricks. |

You gotta walk before you can run. Get some books, look around on-line, find topics you like and keep posting here on the Café. When you get 50 posts, you gain access to the "secret" areas. The more you read, the more you'll learn. But please be patient. Jim |

I do have some books though not many and found some things online but around 90% of my magic tricks are involving cards. I need more variety as all magician's know. I will be patient no worries. And thanks for the tip I had no idea about this secret area. A quite interesting way to keep ya posting |

Anepo,
To get a taste of other magic effects other than card tricks, the following book sets as suggested in the sticky thread will give you good mileage for your money. The explainations are easy enougth to understand even for anybody that is new to magic. Since they are so popular, I'm sure it is not difficult to find a seller that can ship them to you. Of course, you can order Larry's books (Larry is a great magician). Mark Wilson’s Complete Course In Magic The Tarbell Course In Magic Regarding your comments on the cost of the magic trick. Please keep in mind that the majority of what you are paying for is the "method" itself. Using your bowling ball from briefcase example, it is not how much the briefcase or the bowling ball is (whether gimmic or not), what you are paying for is the "method" on how to make it so unbelievable for audiences. For some tricks, sometime what you also paying for is the right to perform the same trick. People put in a lot of efforts to come up with a good trick, it is the "intellectural property" (and using your own term "know how") that you need to compensate the inventor. If you are interested in an effect and want to have some suggestions and opinions on the effect before you fork out the money, people here are willing to help you. Just do a search and see if it is discussed previously or post a new thread. You then can determine whether you should spent the money to buy it. However, if you expect people here to tell you the secret of a trick, you are setting up yourself with a wrong expectation. Not even in the "secret" section. |

I have bought all of my magic books used. That saves me a lot of money and some really good books are out of print anyway.

I make it a point to visit my local book resell shops on a regular basis. The larger ones ALWAYS have at least a dozen or more available, some for as little as $2 (I think I paid $5 for Bobo!)
One thing that I find interesting is that some of those titles NEVER MOVE! There are three copies of Penn & Teller that have been at McKay for a year. David Blane and Criss Angel as well. (I know these are the same books because I recognize a few small dents and creases on the covers) The ones that do move are Mark Wilson, Jean Huggard, and Walter Gibson. I’ll see them one month, gone the next, and another back the next month. Also, to the O.P., if you have access to The Learned Pig Project, the original Tarbell “mail-order” lessons are available for FREE. (This is not everything you’d get by buying the books, but enough to keep you busy for years!)
...what if I could read your mind?
