A Switching tool for mentalists.
If you have ever needed a 2-way switching envelope that could be handled and opened by the spectator, I have one that may suit your requirements. It is made from and therefore looks like an ordinary letter size end opening manila envelope. The envelope is unsealed and lies on the table with the flap tucked in. You explain that is contains a prediction or set of instructions, depending on your presentation. For one option you never touch the envelope again. The spectator picks it up and removes the prediction. For the second option you pick up the envelope and go to remove the prediction, but you have second thoughts, stop and pass the envelope to the spectator saying, “I think you should be opening this.” The switch has taken place. The spectator opens the envelope and removes the second prediction. It is that simple. Automatic 2-Way Prediction Envelope is easy to construct. You’ll make up a couple in 5 minutes. And every time the spectator receives the first prediction, the envelope is used again. Even with the second option, part of the envelope is easily recycled. Note, this envelope is for switching between two single pieces of paper. The predictions are large and not folded. They are almost the size of the actual envelope. This envelope cannot be stuffed with too much bulk or the thickness will look suspicious. Automatic 2-Way Prediction Envelope is a 30 page manuscript available as an instant Download only from my website. http://www.nzmagic.com/mentalismproducts.html It contains full details of the construction along with ideas and routines contributed by myself, Paul Romhany, Richard Osterlind, Greg Arce, Luca Volpe, Andrew Gerard and Stefan Olschewski. Here are some comments from people who have read or contributed to the manuscript. “Wayne Rogers has developed the ultimate switching envelope for when you need the SPECTATOR to do the work. This is excellent” - Ben Harris “I have seen, made, and even created some pretty tricky envelopes in my time, Wayne’s concept here is not only practical, but as close to perfect as I could imagine an envelope could be” - Andrew Gerard “I love tricky envelopes. I know I will find a lot of uses for Wayne Rogers' Auto 2-Way Envelope. It's a nice combination of existing ideas with an added subtlety that takes it to another level. Definitely an idea that all mentalists should have in their arsenal” - Greg Arce “This envelope opens up so many amazing possibilities - one of the best mentalist tools I've seen in a very long time!” - Paul Romhany “Thanks for sending over the manuscript. There are a lot of good ideas there!” - Richard Osterlind http://www.nzmagic.com/mentalismproducts.html |

I need to 'switch in' a prediction in front of (and unknown) to the audience. Will your envelope work for that? I write the prediction in real time during the routine and it needs to be found contained in 'something', so I have to load on the fly. Thanks, Jim

Jim,
My envelope switches between two pieces of writing but they are in the envelope from the start. To load in a prediction during your routine I suggest you look up Patrick Redford's Deux Enveloppes- http://magicbygeorg.4dwebhosting.com |

The 'Automatic 2-Way Prediction Envelope' sounds quite interesting.
I have one question please. If the spectator inadvertently happens to turn the envelope, will it look like a normal envelope? (i.e. does it have a normal looking address side and the flaps side?). P.S. Quote:

The seam did not look natural, the seam is seen at the bottom of the envelope as against being in the center (as in the case of almost all such types of envelopes). Thus I thought the other side of the envelope would also be/ look identical. Thank you for clarifying this. Very interesting. I'll await a review.

I bought a pack of 500 envelopes and thy came just like in the photo. Some manufacturers obviously make them differently. However it would not change the working of the envelope. |

I second Luca's words - when I was asked to contribute to the manuscript I was more than happy. This envelope is simply great and offers so many opportunities!

I had a question about whether these envelopes would work in a children's routine I'm working on where a puppet does a magic trick. So I emailed Wayne Rogers with my question, and he wrote me a long letter describing the pros and cons of using his envelopes in my routine, and then he suggested a better way to do it, with materials I can make at home. That's good customer service!

Interesting... this sounds a lot like something Ted Lesley published in Paramiracles. Any influence?

To my big surprise, I've just found that the very same principle of the Automatic 2-Way Envelope (which has earned my highest praises in the past) had been described in The Linking Ring already years ago...
Wayne, I'll send you an email later with more information.

Hi all,
I'm very interested on a prediction envelope opened by the spectator. Ideally I'd need 3 options and not only 2. Do you know if there is any technique or gimmick (maybe even a modification of Wayne's one) that I could study / buy? Thanks! |

Since the thread began a couple of years ago, Stevens Magic have released the Auto 2-Way Prediction Envelope in book form 43 pages of construction and routines. Most of the book is routines from many contributors. The envelope is easy to make from 2 regular end opening letter envelopes and takes just a few minutes. ConSealment is a different 3 1/4" x 5 1/2" coin type envelope. It is also two way but uses no glue and can be used over and over. There are 10 envelopes and a DVD in the package. Video Production is by Paul Romhany. The auto envelope is a simplified form of Telport Envelope. It does not require scissors, and may be handled by the spectator. ConSealment is handled by the performer and is used in different routines. |

Just an update on one of my routines using the auto 2-way envelope. Check out the latest issue of the free VANISH Magazine.
Around page 16-18 is a routine called Steak Night. www.http://www.vanishmagazine.com/ This routine requires you to make a special prop and then the envelope does all the work for you. |
