Had to do this after the sax category.
Little Walter was probably the most influntial. Junior Wells is my favorite, and he certainly owed a lot to Little Walter. There's something about Junior's playing that does it for me. I started listening to Junior and Blues Traveler at the same time and Junior's style was in direct contrast with Popper's. Whereas John Popper seemed to be frantically trying to get every note he could out before he dropped dead, Junior could squeeze all the emotion in the world into a couple note fill. Something like "less is more." Not that I don't like Blues Traveler. They were (are?) awesome. But, I choose Junior, with admitted bias. Honorable mention also goes to Charlie Musslewhite and Sonny Boy II.

I saw Trina Hamlin live, and she just blew me away. She's unbelievable.
Check her out if you haven't heard of her. |

Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee deserve a mention.
Two guys who are not really "blues men" but are excellent just the same are Mickey Raphael who playes in Willie Nelsons band. He's outstanding. And Toots Thielemans, who may be the best ever. |

I love all the players mentioned so far. But to me, nobody comes close to Little Walter's tone and phrasing. He was an exquisite musician.
The problem with Walter is that when he left Muddy Waters's band and went solo, he started making R and B music that nobody has a taste for anymore. But check out his and Muddy's performance of "Standing around crying"--Wow! John

The great Jimmy Reed deserves a mention.

All great harp players mentioned so far and although he's not necessarily billed as a Bluesman, Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson Band) is quite adept IMO! I met and got to hang out with Mickey a dozen or so years ago and he's a hellava nice guy as well!
I've played harmonica on and off for 35 years and actually got pretty good at one point but 40 years of smoking is not conducive to a long career on da harp! |

Nobody was better than Little Walter, or Junior Wells, or Jimmy Reed, although I think Jimmy Reed's style was a bit more limited. I have also always liked Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller).

Sonny Boy II had a gloriously rich and deep tone.

I'd say Junior Wells is one of my top favorites. I've been harping for about 25 years now, but still can't get that deep down "feel" for blues. I can bend notes quite well, but I just don't have the feel, if ya know what I mean. Junior, and many others really have it. Sonny Boy II does have a nice tone too. I just listened to some of his stuff, and it was very good to my ears.

I have the opposite problem. I have more feel than skill I've sat in with a couple of great local dudes on jam nights at the blues clubs. Blew harp and sang. That was years ago though.
I actually used to have a vhs on Blues Harp by Junior Wells. Man was it hard to follow his speech patterns. "You tiddly-take thiddledee diddldee over this little thing here." Stuff like that. It was crazy. But man was he cool. That's where I learned the water glass trick to make it sound like your harp is mic'd.

He was never very well known as a performer, but Tony "Little Sun" Glover's book was my introduction to this genre of music.
