I am new in ventriloquism.Basically I'm a magician but was always interested in ventriloquism .I bought the Paul Winchell dvd and also have the IMS ventriloquism volume.I have been using socks however I think it;s time to put ventriloquism in my show .So I now want to switch to something bigger(soft or hard puppets).What will be best for me within 100$?I also want it to be as close as possible to professional puppets.Thanks and tips will be greatly appreciated.
When U just started,did you guys practiced everywhere all the time.I learned magic by palming cards and coins all day long.I am doing the same with ventriloquism too.

Under a 100. is impossible for a hard figure, and even soft figures can be hard to get for that, though it is a little easier, depending on what you're looking for exactly.
There's a line of puppets called/or by "Sunny & Co." that are pretty decent puppets for cheap, usually anywhere from 30-something to 50-something - here's an ebay seller that carries a bunch of them. They are usually about 28" tall and include the rod for one of the arms; http://shop.ebay.com/loadsapuppetsusa/m.......40.l2562 As for practicing everywhere, one of the best places is in the car going back and forth to work or wherever. No one can hear you, and even if your lips move, nowadays, they'll just think you're talking on some cellphone gadget.

Asgar, to learn vent the correct way I would highly recommend taking the Maher Course in Ventriloquism. While the Winchell book is ok and I'm not sure what the IMS volume is (and I've been in vent full time for over 30 years!), the really best way to go is through Maher. You can reach them by emailing Clinton Detweiler at MaherTalk@AOL.com
As for puppets..I also recommend Prince Puppets in Allison Park, PA . The puppet maker is Jill Harrington and she makes a wonderful, inexpensive puppet (not cheap..just inexpensive) You can find her on the internet under Prince Puppets. If you are getting started and you want to add vent to a magic act, then the soft puppet is ususally the best way to go. The hard figures are expensive, and a bit harder to transport, especially if you fly to dates. Hope this helps! Mark markwade@kidshowvent.com |

You might also want to check the Ebay auctions each day. There you can find some really good deals on used figures and puppets. Even though they are "used", most vents take real good care of their "family" and I'm sure you would be able to adopt one within your bidget if you are patient enough to wait for the right deal to come along. I also totally agree with Mark and would recommend a soft puppet which is normally way less expensive than a traditional vent figure and much easier to transport and "master". You can also check the classifieds on Vent Central and see if someone is selling something that may be of interest to you!

Asgar;
I started with an eBay hard figure and he was a great deal; I have made Dan more than a dummy by working with him and deciding what his background will be and how his attitude will affect his behavior in the routine. |

Go to any slightly upmarket (arty) toy shop and you might just find a puppet you will fall for. I have always bought puppets only if I feel a connection with them. The first time the puppet lay on my shelf for ten years, but is now in every show. The second time I got a puppet I fell for he went into the show that afternoon.

Look around for the Chico the Mind Reading Monkey; you can get the videos and puppet with the props for about $100.00, then you would have a routine and a puppet to get you going |

I'd watch this seller on ebay. He has figure on ebay regularly, most seem to go for around your target amount, the last one he had up on ebay ended at 244. - so definitely worth watching, and he makes good figures;
