Balloon swallow and talking dog.
Funnily the professor's nightmare always gets the parents more than the kids.

Armando:
I have to say the chair suspension!! (just kidding). I do the Kandu Comedy Carton in all my kid shows, and the little ones howl, and the parents laugh watching the kids. This is a really nice routine. I highly recommend the Kandu carton. Jim |

Red Carpet goes well over 5s if you have adult pick the force chip and also tell the kids three or four times not to blurt out what the selection was. You need audience control, but I've done it at 6-year-old boy parties (with super hero reveal) and the parents are as enthralled as the kids (or more so). And if you milk it, this can be a great closer.

I believe in the wisdom first espoused by Eric Wilson many years ago in his excellent book about kid shows.
You should ignore the parents COMPLETELY and work to the kids alone. If you entertain the kids the parents will be perfectly happy. On another thread I mentioned the difference between American children's entertainers and British ones. We British know that you must completely ignore the adults and work to the kids alone. The adults will still be entranced especially when you get one of the kids up to help you. It really is a major mistake to try and entertain the adults when you are doing a kid show. Work to the kids and the adults will follow. Americans don't seem to realise this and insist on trying to please the adults when they should completely ignore them. If you start trying to please the adults you will start to lose the kids. I don't do or believe in "family shows" Sure I get booked for them but I make sure to get all the kids seated in the front and work to them alone. I am not interested in the bloody family. When they see the kids screaming and yelling they will be happy enough. |

What about Kimmo's act then Mark?
Once you've learnt how to entertain the children (Americans and goats have "kids" you've clearly been away far too long) it is perfectly possible to entertain the adults at the same time thus stopping them from talking at the back and negating the need to send them out lists of rules before the show. The problem arises when entertainers try to perform an adult act for children with no idea how to entertain children ie looking over their heads and addressing the adults directly, making double-entendres or doing self-involved technically impressive stuff that is really not for the children or adults but for themselves. I sort of "ignore" the adults as everything is addressed to the children but there is stuff in there for them that I can say without detracting from the entertainment value for the "kids" |

Don't they call the little brats kids in the UK any more? Very well then. I shall refer to them as brats as this is probably more accurate. And I do wish you hadn't mentioned goats. I do not approve of them.
As for Kimmo I actually thought of him when I made my post. I think of him more as a ventriloquist than as a magician but that is beside the point. If it hadn't been for me scamming his mother into buying a poor quality Svengali deck in Blackpool when he was 6 years old he would never have become a world champion children's entertainer in the first place. Or at least the Derek Lever version of being a world champion magician. Kimmo is indeed an exception but even he is probably focused more on the kids than the adults. As to your other points I quite agree with them but it is interesting that you yourself are basically concentrating on the kids. By all means have stuff in the show that the adults will like but they should be completely ignored. I didn't say don't entertain the adults. I merely said ignore them and work to the kids. The adults will enjoy it anyway. I often have adults come up to me afterwards saying, " I enjoyed that just as much as the kids!" |

If you are hired as a CHILDREN'S performer to entertain CHILDREN only, I agree wholeheartedly with the above statement. When the kids are happy the mom is happy, and when the mom is happy the dad is happy. That's the natural order of things. I never liked purple Barney much, but my daughter did so we had Barney videos, stuffed toys, books, and stickers. Never once did Barney try to entertain ME.
However, when I am hired to entertain FAMILY audiences, I work for all ages. I have teenagers and older couples who come to my resort shows, and if I only play to the kids those who are not there with children will NOT be entertained. |

Yes they will. If you know what you are doing that is.
But of course circumstances differ. If there are only a few kids in the audience and a large percentage of people there who did not bring kids then perhaps things may be different. Most of the time though when I hear the words "family show" I automatically translate it in my mind to "childrens show" |

I look at it as there is no right or wrong way. Magicians are different. If everyone of us performed the same, most of us would be out of business. A magician shall perform the way he pleases as long as he is entertaining his targeted audience. Always remember to be yourself. So I have nothing against a kid's or family magician.

Like Mark I perform for the children if I have been hired to perform for the children. I don't play to the adults. And it works.
This afternoon I was hired to entertain the children at an American Wake (when a family is emigrating). Every adult watched the entire hour. Not one single gag aimed at them. I believe in entertaining the target audience but making the show so entertaining no one turns away. I don't always achieve that, but it is the aim.

Forget who wants to entertain whom and just staying on topic here. Smokey Mountain Pizza Box entertains EVERYONE! And the kids go nuts with it and laugh, which is one of Mark's prerequisites in kids magic. Ya gotta make 'em laugh and have fun first!
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
