Last Thursday I was flying home from Charlotte, NC and phoned my wife to tell her when to meet me at the airport. She said she needed to pull off the freeway and call me back about something important.
The something important was the the youngest of our three horses, Boris, died suddenly Thursday morning. As best she could tell, whatever it was, it was mercifully quick; it appears that he just died and fell over (i.e., no signs of struggling). He was only 15 years old. Boris was something of a rescue horse: many owners before us, some of whom (it appeared) mistreated him. He was exceptionally spooky: he especially hated anything white sitting on the ground and would jump or run to avoid it. He never reached what I think was his full potential, but he definitely wanted to please whoever was with him. All-in-all, a good boy. We'll miss him dearly. |

Our mare, Valentine, also an Arabian, is 29 (and thinks she's a six-year-old). Our other gelding, Khaleel, another Arabian, will be 22 this month. Large breeds - Clydesdales, Percherons, Shires - can live well into their 20s. |

So sorry to hear that!
I've lost a couple of dogs and realise the sadness that it brings. They're not blood relatives, but the bond between man and beast is sometimes as strong. Cheers,Ray.
What do we want?

Although I have never had a horse pass away suddenly, I have had to put several of ours down thru the years. There is something so real about a horse, they get to your soul. Condolences, it is never easy.

So sorry for your loss Bill! I attached a link for the symptoms of the EHV-1! There's probably little chance that was the cause!
The oldest horse I've ever worked on was a Arabian mare of 42 and I heard that she made it another 2 years after I saw her! http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/animal_heal......rus.html MMc |
