As far as the "high profile" I think Terry Herbert is far better than most high-profile Americans I have seen. (What does this have to do with games?) |

Methinks this thread began over at the Magic Bistro and wandered into the Café with a little help from MI6....
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Actually I am a member on the bistro and posted there as well.
I have started a new thread and requested this on be removed as it has now become a rant thread. |

Well maybe it would not become a "rant" thread if some folks would not make such blatantly absurd statements that insult so many folks.
I hate it when threads get spun out of control as well. But I will not stand for anyone flat out insulting Americans and American manufacturers. Maybe someone on the other side of the pond should spend less time being the greatest magician and spend a bit more time working on their research and manners. Chance

I wasn't going to get involved in this but I have to. Although I am a British magician, I am a huge fan of Tommy James and anyone who has read my previous posts will know this to be true. I believe that there are good and bad magicians wherever you go in the world but I have two questions
1) what has any of this to do with games? 2) Starrpower:- what has that cheap shot about toothpaste got to do with good or bad magicians or even British or American people (have you been to some parts of the south?) Just when this forum was starting to work together to help each other out, a spanner gets thrown into the works! Come on people, we are better than this!! This thread was a chance to work together and brainstorm ideas about games but first we had the "I don't do games" people (why are they commenting on a thread for people who do?) Then we had the whole "my dads bigger than your dad" bit and, as a result, the thread has been re-posted and a request has gone in for this thread to be removed!!! Rant over so, as always, I will leave with a genuine wish for you all to Have fun Bill

When I was in school we called people like him "bullies" and it took someone to stand up to them once it in a while to keep them from taking over. |

CHANCE: I don't own any of your products but only because my budget has never allowed it, I personally think that your work is excellent and I get annoyed by the argument of "give a bad magician great props & he's still a bad magician but a great magician will make mediocre props look great" What about giving good magicians great props & letting them fly and that, Chance, is what you do. Most people will know what a fan I am of Tommy James Measle Teasle wand, the wand itself is a very basic, simple idea but I really love Tommy's routine which fits my style perfectly. My point is that not all Brits feel the same way and that I, for one, prefer it when we work together and, to that end, I went over to the reposted thread and offered one of my humble games for whoever can use it and I would like to ask if all who do games would do the same. Let's keep the Café conversational and not turn it into a bar room brawl Have fun Bill

Chance should be grateful to me for giving him a chance (no pun intended) to plug his wares.
I will admit that American kid show entertainer are getting better than they used to be but that is because they are beginning to learn from the British. I will also confess that British kids entertainers seem to be deteriorating in standards but that is no doubt because they are reading too many American books and purchasing too many American props. Furthermore it ill behooves Starrpower to chatter about being offensive and a bully. I have read his other posts many times before I ever came here and came to the conclusion that he was one of the most offensive posters on the magic Café. And I think Chance is a little traumatised and is not thinking clearly. I never mentioned design or graphics in any way, shape or form. I do not believe that he can possibly match the quantity and quality of Supreme Magic in the UK but I said I would reserve judgement so I will. I will have a look at his website and see if his stuff is as good as he says it is. I do hope he charges reasonable prices. I am getting vibes that he doesn't from what Bill Knight said about his "budget". But Tony is right. It isn't the props that make the magician. It is the magician that makes the props shine. Bill is of course right when he says that a good magician may as well use a good prop. However the snag with that is that it is usually the awful magician, of which there really are a great many, who tends to spend money on fancy props. I venture to say that if there were no bad magicians Chance would go out of business very quickly. It is the bad magicians who will keep him going because it is the bad magicians who will believe a beautiful prop will take them where their talent will not. Still I will indeed have a look at all the props he is blatantly advertising on here now that I have given him an opportunity to do so. They won't be much use to me of course since I work out of a briefcase with the most battered and ugly props you can imagine. However, since I am great performer and my critics are quite mediocre in comparison it doesn't really matter a toss. And I should remind all those who are tut-tutting about the US versus Britain thing is that it was Americans starting the war on this thread in the first place. Of course they are always starting wars around the world anyway but perhaps we had better not get into that. I am not the sort to stir up dissension. it doesn't matter in the slightest. |

I have now looked at Chance's products and nearly fainted when I saw the prices. Still, all power to him if he can get it and I am sure he does. As long as there are bad magicians around who think beautiful props are the way to greatness he will do very well. I hope and pray for his sake that bad magicians will be plentiful so that he can do well out of them.
They do seem beautifully made and colourful. Still they are not for me. I can get the same reaction out of an old envelope as his customers will get with all the lovely fancy stuff. I am a trifle puzzled about the Run Wolfe Run thing. He says that it will fit into a briefcase. It bloody won't by the look of it. Still, perhaps he included it accidentally in his lost of pack flat play big items. Anyway I have now given him a further chance to chatter about his products and I do hope he will be suitably grateful. |

Are you trying to tell me that it is all about the skill of the magician? What a novel concept. I am also one of the many magicians on Chance's waiting list to buy one of his chicken swords, so I love a beautiful prop too.

Kids like beautiful props too. They like costumes. They like colour. But most of all they like to laugh. If you have to you can do without the first three but you can NEVER do without the last.

Chance, I'm going to chime in here because I agree with you. I'm a relative newcomer to magic as a retired guy looking to have fun with magic....not professionally.....I just love it. I've posted in numerous places about my newbieness but I also don't feel respected because I don'tdo magic for a living. I get the sense that I'm tolerated, but not a real pro, and I don't pretend to be. But I love this stuff and hunger to learn from the pros. But when I say that I perform for free or for charities, someone always tells me I should charge money. Well, I'm not ready to charge money yet! I'm having fun, honing my stuff and seeking more advice and tips. And if I can help, I try to do that too, based on many bad purchases and other experiences. But I spend a lot of money with folks like you and just because I'm not a pro, I get a sense in some circles, that I'm on the other side of the tracks, as it were. And you hit it on the head: for me, it's all about the JOY of it all, no matter how that joy is experienced.
