After examining "several" Chinese Rip-Offs it is noted that the counterfeit instruction sheets are on paper that is about a quarter-of-an-inch SMALLER then the legit U.S. ones... It's difficult to see any difference in the printing, but I finally noticed the size discrepancy.
Products copied that we have seen: Ghostly Linking Finger Rings, Just a Key, Just-IN-Case, Card Clip, Koran Prediction billet knife and Strong Box. Arrrggggg.... no wonder sales have slowed on these.

There was a PBS special I saw including a segment of how the Chinese have not regard for ownership or copyright and pirate the most music in the world. The government is *supposed* to start cracking down on this (yeah, right.)
I guess the only things to do are market and push the heck of a new release to dilute the market, then inform people of the lack of quality. And then there is the constant education that a lemon is a lemon and not a bargain. Keep your heads up high and know you are doing a service to magic as an art. Magically, Walt |

I should have noted the legit instructions are, when opened flat are on standard 8.5 X 11-inches. Bogus are about /14-in. short on the 8 1/2-dimension.

All kinds of rip-offs out there...mostly from China. I have been corresponding with Daryl quite a bit, letting him know of some knock-offs on E-Bay...which he was able to get removed. I also emailed Juan Mayoral to let him know that E-Bay has a $50 version of his $500 effect, Meteors.
I will be watchful for others as well.

I've seen METEORS on a chinese website... very cheap. Probably poorly made too.

Juan emailed me back about it. He says there at least 5 chinese companies knocking his product off. He says tere is nothing he can do.
It's a shame, most of it is crap, and the unwary consumer may think that the real deal is crap.

The people buying this junk and keeping the rip-off producers in business know how to contact the originators. These buyers want something cheap. Crap is what they buy. As long as cheapness reigns, the rip-off guys will exist and thrive at the expense of the originators. The buyers are to blame. Without these buyers, the rip-off guys would vanish. It's all part of the entitled attitude of so many in magic.

Very true, MR.
Daryl was able to get the rip-off artist to remove his knock-off of Presto Printo...but relisted it three days later. Luckily, I had him on my watch list, and caught it. I contacted Daryl again, and the item has once again been removed. Unfortunately, watching for this crap could be a full time job...and who has that kind of time?

Pete... I hope that I'm not doing you a dis-service.. but to say that the instructions are the wrong size is almost like saying that the props you get are first class.. but the instructions are the wrong size.
from what I understand.. the undersized instructions are the LEAST of the problems you get with some of these props.. What you sometimes get is a prop that simply doesn't work. |

I think Pete was explaining another way you can determine if its a rip-off. The wrong size instructions is just another clue (and a good one to help).
The part I hate about the knock-offs is that a lot of people new to magic, or just buying for their kid, nephew, whatever; have no idea that they are rip-offs. I am one who did just that YEARS ago! I bought the "Card to Box" which of course had been and continues to be ripped off. I didn't know any better. I had no clue that the $15-25 shoul dhave been a clue. Again, I wa scompletely new and went to a magic shop out of curiosity. I had never heard of "Magic Café" until 10 years later. That was the 2nd trick I bought. From a magic shop in Texas (Dallas). Back in 1995. And of course NUMEROUS people buythem on E-bay. Well, at least now I definitley know and don't support it at all. BTW: Pete is a great guy and stands by his work. I bought one of his pieces here from fellow "Magic Café" member. It had "paint damage" and just didn't look right for Pete's work. Even though I didn't purchase directly from Pete, he had me send it to him. He ended up sending me a new one. Now I am thinking that maybe it was a rip-off??? I woul dhate to think it was sold by a Café member, but of course just being a member means nothing. I know many on here don't give a crap about protecting the originators... I have rambled enough. Right, I meant the paper size was a "tip off" that you got a bogus product.

It is even worse when you are ripped off by some one here in the U.S.A., someone of fame in our magic circle and it happens quite often.
It is way more painful when it is some one whom you have placed you trust in.
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.
