Just a notion re: provenance for this or that weird artifact -- these days I think that even more than in Victorian days it might be plausible for some Russian academic to have sent a sample of findings, or maybe it could be layered timewise a little, something sent to a relative in the 1910s or so ...

Or I suppose it could be played for laughs as well if it turns out to be just a standard plastic picnic fork from the local grocery store.

Well, that's my notion and I admit it's rather notional.
